Poster: A snowHead

I've seen a pair of skis on Ebay (I know, I know),if I follow the slush + rubble length guide, they will be 5cm too short. I have experienced ski "flap" with skis from rental shops in the past. I understood that this was due to the ski being too short/me being fat/going too fast. The ski is a Salomon Scream 8 Pilot W in a 155. I'm 165. Is it worth me bidding-or should I go for a 160

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

I'd be pretty surprised if that were too short for you, I'd think 160 was too long.
Anyway, I probably talk rubbish, why not look at the Salomon web site? Key in your height, weight etc etc and they'll tell you lengths.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Maybe if you bid 160 the length will go up

My wife just bought those skis in 155. 5 foot 4 (164cm), instructor. No problems reported.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

snowbunny, I'm 180cm, and my main skis are 170.
Skis flapping in normal skiing is due to lack of edge grip, which can either be due to blunt edges, or poor technique. If they are flapping when you are straightlining, then it's the ski!

Definitely you can go way shorter than that, depending on the ski make and model.

ise, Ta will do, only problem is they are not a current model.telford_mike, All the write ups I could find suggested that this was a soft flex ski for lightweight advanced skiers, I'm 68 kilos with 50-60 weeks on skis over 21 winters (the weight is why I think I may have to go longer)Wear The Fox Hat, Tried out Crossmax8 in a 160 (flap) straight line, carving ok. My current ski BanditL 170 no flap anywhere, my old skinny skis-K2TRC 190 no flap anywhere - the length guidance there was determined by 2 different folk in the industry, both of whom had skied with me plenty of times.

snowbunny, I think any length of Crossmax8 will flap if they are skiied in anything other than a slow snowplough. The Crossmax8 is NOT an advanced ski. Intermediate at the most, IMHO. I've skiied the Crossmax10, and almost fell asleep, although it is such an easy ski, it makes you feel like you are a good skier.
Get yourself a pair of K2 Burning Luvs in a 155 (it might be 158). You won't regret it.

Wear The Fox Hat, I got put off K2's when my old pair had a nasty with the triaxial braid swelling up. The K2 Burnin Luv 153/160 also seems to be packaged with Marker bindings which I have found difficult to put on after a fall in deep snow-maybe they have improved the step in?. ise, I cruised over to the Salomon site, it advised me to buy a Scrambler 7 Pilot length 155, but this is a different ski to the one on ebay, just got on the scales, make that 70kg plus boots.

Oh all right then.... I confess I'm over 50, 166 cm short, heavy(75 Kg), built like the proverbial s ***house and very fit. My son has the same skis as me (Atomic C9s). His are 160s, mine are 170s. We've swapped a couple of times and although I find the 160s marginally more easy to turn, I find them a lot less stable. My priority is not falling over when I'm going fast, hence I've kept the 170s and am very happy with them. Most charts say that they are too long for me but real life testing tells me otherwise.
I'm sure the move to shorter skis is right (I used to ski 190s) but not too short!

jtr, Thankyou, good to see I'm not alone in not fitting the ski sizing "norms"! My GP takes my height/weight and tells me I am overweight-but the BMI is good taken together a below average bodyfat measurement (and I can see my ribs)-the ski makers seem to believe that women skiers are a UK size 12. I may email slush + rubble, see what they suggest.

S+R responded quickly to my ? email. They say 155cm. Could go longer, but it would be to the detriment of on piste performance! I have my answer
