Planning on going to Zermatt from Dec. 19th to 26th - Flying over from Toronto, Canada. Never skied there,
arriving with large group of 13 (10 skiers and 3 non-skiers) - mainly intermediates and a few strong intermediates.
Looking for accomodation suggestions - can only find one catered chalet that can accomodate us at approx.
120 BP per person per night - a little expensive for our tastes - 4 of the people are 13 yr old girls. - looking
at either a hotel with breakfast or an apartment complex - any suggestions?
Looked at some apartments with Loving Zermat - either the Esplanade, Ana, or Alouette apartments. Anybody
had experiences with any of these.
This will be the first ski trip over the pond for most of the people - is Zermatt the best choice? We will be flying
into Zurich. Any other suggestions would be welcome.

sawni, Zermatt is a remarkable place, and you might find some accommodation on www.interhome.com. I have no experience of these apartments, but you get a very different experience the closer to the resort entrance you are, but its also cheaper.
Many years ago I stayed in Chalet Mazot which is available and in a really good position near the Sunnega express. Some of the runs may be a bit light on snow cover this early in the season as the terrain is so rocky, most will be good though, but your non skiers could not have a better place to be with wonderful walks, railway rides and an atmosphere just on the safe side of kitch.
Its also more affordable than the Eurozone at present, although perfectly possible to be separated from a small fortune if you go to the top places!
The other apartments worth a look might be the Paradies, Annapurna, Christiana or Ginabelle.
The ride up from Zurich Airport by train is picturesque and very easy, prebook a Swiss Pass transfer ticket, change in Visp (which has a good supermarket downstairs if you are peckish, & interesting ultraviolit lit toilets) for the breathtaking ride up to Zermatt.

sawni, You say it's the first trip over the pond for most people in your group, so I think Zermatt is a good call -it's an iconic historic Alpine resort, suitable for the intermediates and strong intermediates in your group. The Matterhorn is the most photogenic mountain in the world IMO  , and you can ski over to Italy (Cervinia). Flying into Zurich airport the transfer by train is a doddle (Zurich airport has its own rail station, see Swiss railways site - the trip to Zermatt takes about 3½ hours). Incidentally you can buy the swiss transfer ticket which is a special rate ticket that covers return travel from any Swiss airport to any swiss resort, but you can only buy this from abroad, not once you have arrived in Switzerland. You can buy this from several places in addition to the sbb site eg here. You might be able to get a discounted group rate if you ask.
I don't know about the accommodation you mention, but I have stayed at the Hotel Europe and can recommend it, friendly owners and good food.
