Great route for me, shame about the high prices though.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

ssnowman, £49 one way is hardly a high price. In my day, £160 return London-Geneva was considered a bargain

I think they announced this last winter and then pulled it. IIRC there were going to be two operators flying in the Sion last year but both pulled due to cost / lack of interest.
Sion is prone to weather issues and has a lower ILS (cat I or III, can't remember which way round they go) than larger airports. Flights are quite often diverted in the winter.

If you are are keen on the 4-Vallees (particularly if you stay in Nendaz, Veysonnaz or Les Collons) then this is fantastic news!!!!!! (too bad I've already booked most of my 2009/10 flights with easyjet... )

Parlor's right. I've flown to Sion 5 times and only landed there twice. It's a real bore diverting to GVA and having to hack back to the Valais. They need to see the ground from 1500m and even if the weather's settled you often get an inversion in the valley in the winter which scuppers them. It's a shame, but that explains why it's not used more.

I was a rep back in the day, and we used Sion as our main airport. In the space of 3 winters I only had 4 diversions. You just need hard core pilots!
The best thing about Sion is the restaurant at the airport - fantastic food. Also as it's such a lovely little airport any problems can be dealt with very easily.

ballyhoo, I suspect this may have been the case a while ago. More modern airplanes rely on more specific landing equipment. I know nothing about flying, my father is a pilot, Sion is one of the hardest airports to land at regardless of visibility.
