Just been asked to do some skiing for a ski vid early next year and they want powder stuff, yeah I know cliché, but the client is always right. I have to tell em where to shoot, they will send some camera chap, which is costly so think Europe may be a bit risky. Although have had some brill powder whizzing around Zermatt (best ever) but the cost of going there and just waiting is a non-starter, so need to have a better chance of some fluffy stuff.
I assume the answer is USA. But, never been there, so where is powder normally guaranteed. And when is the best time to get it.
Any ideas would be really helpful.
Cheers

When is early? I'd say that if you spent a fortnight in Salt Lake City most of the season you'd be extremely unlucky not to get some glamour powder although as I'm sure you are aware powder = storms, NOT = blue sky ideal filming conditions. Don't think anywhere has guaranteed pow pre Xmas however. If money's no object how about Japan?

Wayne, would second Utah as a recommendation. Fly into Salt Lake City, rent a condo in the south-east corner (Cottonwood heights). This would give you easy access to Solitude and brighton in Big Cottonwood Canyon, and Snowbird and Alta in Little Cottonwood Canyon. There are another half a dozen resorts like Powder Mountain, THe Canyons, Park City and Deer Valley within half an hours drive.
Japan would also be worth considering, the powder is less likely to be tracked over there as the locals have a thig about skiing trees,

Was thinking (just 1st thoughts) of looking at a TO holiday for a couple of weeks somewhere - should work out cheaper and lot less hassle - I think ?

Late Feb - Utah or Tahoe or British Columbia (Just keep an eye on El Nino for the latter). Utah is basically SLC area and the areas east of Ogden (about 45mins north). If you need a guide to shooting locations (& a stills photgrpgher) you could do worst than to look up this guy http://www.adambarkerphotography.com/portfolios/active/5.

Wayne, we've just done two weeks in Utah, Jan / feb this year, TO worked out a lot more expensive for us. Can forward details if you like. Food is bloody awful in Utah though, everything is loaded with Salt and SUgar
Whistler / Vancouver might be another choice, I can recommend and B&B and a stills photogprapher there

What do you mean by powder? Do you meen waist deep soft stuff and needing a snorkel for breathing? Less deep? Or, just jolly nice untracked snow? If just the latter then suggest any of the European resorts and hire a good local guide to take you off piste to somewhere nice. From Val d'Isere I have skied geat soft snow days after the last snowfall and in vast areas that are untracked.

You can pretty easily if AA still do that direct flight to Chicago. No direct UK flights to SLC, easiest trfrs seemed to be throgh Minneapolis or Chicago.

Wayne, if you're having to ask us the question, why are they asking you the question?
Utah's a reasonable suggestion. Just it's not infallible. Sometimes it doesn't snow there (like, when I'm there) or some of last year. Wyoming also good.
What's the objective? Skiing in deep powder to represent that that's what they get locally? (Walk away, walk away, walk away...) Or just a good ski film?

under a new name,
Slightly aggressive questioning, but ok.
They are not a ski film maker but (don't know how and not really interested) they have been given this job to promote skiing on a UK website, not sure which one but, again, not really my problem. All I know is that they want an english ski instructor who speaks english and italian to d the normal "stuff" in some powder (ya know – through trees, off some big bumps, down steep stuff, bit of moguls, stupid turns to camera with big spray of snow, etc, etc basically the same stuff that everyone who can ski does every time there is a good dump of fluffy stuff). They have asked me to recommend a place to get the shots. I said I would try and help. So, I asked here.
Like everyone who skis for a while I have had some absolutely brill powder days, but, I cant say when these will happen, so I’m trying t act professionally and give them some options and choice of places where it is "likely". Not guaranteed, but more likely, over a couple of weeks period.
The job is funded by the trentino tourist authority, other than that I know sod all about it other than they want someone who teaches in italy with an english ascent who can ski a little.
As for the walk away bit - I did a ski-bounding through the trees type photo shoots a few years ago for a uk womens magazine who just wanted a blah blah shot to promote their own ski holidays, fine by me. Its just sliding roun on 2 planks, nowt to get het-up about.

Mt Baker north of Seattle (apparently) recieves some of the highest snow fall of any ski resort in the world.
And also holds the world record for largest total snowfall in one season (1000+ inches )

Can the camera crew go off-piste?
If they can, Colorado might be just as good as Utah, or better.
While not getting the big "dump" as often as Utah, it has more blue sky days for filming.
With a local guide, you can almost always able to find some backcountry route that has un-tracked powder.
Not to mention the drinks in Colorado are not watered down.

Lot's of snowy days at the WA resorts, but don't count on blue skies for filming

hmmmm you are going to need fresh tracks on a bluebird day which means you are going to have to get away from the crowds...
If you time it right, any old resort of the back will do... if you don't you could be walking a few kms.
I would pick a tourers resort and avoid larger places where the locals will get there before you do...
I wouldn't dismiss Europe and if the Canera crew were Italian, just have them on stand-by and fly out after a storm.
The point about the crew being good skiers or not does cme into how far you can go away from the crowds..
Basically, you'll need somewhere over the back which is a hassle for most to even think about.. so a walk out is proabable...
If the budget would stretch to it..I get a heli off the Rutor and ski down any number or routes the 20kms to St Foy..always been a goal of mine..
Monterosa with a heli as well...but you need to get the storm timed right...
or.... quite a few Italian resorts as the Italians don't go off-piste first...they might follw you later once you have shown them the lines a few times..
Cervinia was classic for this..... we got a whole morning and some before they pitched in...
I'd put the money in a heli and a good guide to make getting those shots easier...if the skiing is marginal, then that is what they will be paying you for..to make it look good..

If its Trentino tourist board I'd think they'd be on shaky ground looking to shoot in another country entirely, doesn't look good does it - our snow's so unreliable we had to fly to the US to film? I would also imagine that they've got a fairly fixed idea of budget - 1 day's filming with a reserve day, cheap accomodation etc.

fatbob,
I think (may be wrong) it's just a general "ain't skiing fun" type thingy. So not specific to an area, but think will end up leaping around the dolomites as we can gaurantee some powder days (at least a few anyway). But had to give them some input as they asked.

If it's an Italian company then base yourself in Gressoney, get in with the local guides, with a combination of the heli and some skins you should be able to get the shots you want I'd say.

SMALLZOOKEEPER,
Deadline, don't know - I have contract for 4 days skiing and 4 days misc (travel and what-not). Misc days are paid 1/4% of ski days. It's OK for me.
Footage, again don't know.
Dates, still don't know, contract is for next march

Wayne, didn't really intend to be so aggressive, just seemed like an odd question (s)
Still sort of begs the question as to why they wouldn't just grab local footage as and when the storms roll in and out. Keep us posted.

under a new name,
I (like most people i think) have an idea of un-ending powder in the usa. But, I have never been there and when I got asked to recommend somewhere for this shoot I just though I'd ask as I know loads of people on here have been skiing over there. Mind you, there more I think about it the more I think our area (dolomites) will be just as good as anywhere, when the condidtions are right. But hey, free trip to US and get paid to leap around on some planks - what would you do, I think I'll try and do the MP's system, and get what I can if the (any) government is paying for it

Glad to hear it's not just us........Did 10 days skiing at 5 Utah areas (Park City, Canyons, Deer Valley, Alta & Snowbird) last January. Had wall to wall sun and fantastic snow conditions but not a trace of powder.......Did ski some powder at Cairngorm though.

Wayne, ah...well I was once told by a guide in Wyoming, when I asked her how often they got the 50cms of fresh that we were breaking tracks through replied with a puzzled look, "uh, every day?"
Yeah, for sure, if someone was going to increase my number of ski days and pay for it...yeah, bring it on.
