While other areas of North America experience record snows, the north-west continues to be ravaged by mild winds. Rain-damaged and thawed ski areas in Washington State, Idaho, Oregon and British Columbia have been closing and urgently await a turn in the weather.
Whistler has put out a press release dispelling rumours that the resort will close - they're busy with snow-harvesting and other measures to keep runs running... Interestingly, one little-known ski mountain in the Pacific Northwest - Red Resort - is luckier. They've retained enough snow to operate all runs.
The situation in the east couldn't be more contrasting - New York State and Vermont are enjoying a big 'snow-boost' to the ski season, following a shaky start. The city of Boston has experienced record-breaking snowfall in recent days. Back in the west, the key 'ski states' of California, Colorado and Utah continue to reap the benefits of the massive snowstorms in early January.

So, in the midst of these mixed fortunes, where's the cheapest place to buy ski gear right now? Not surprisingly it's probably Seattle. Retailers there are clearing the shelves, in the face of desperate trading conditions: another report from The Seattle Times.

If you are travelling to British Columbia, the news isn't all bad. Fernie still has a reasonable amount of skiing, and Kimberley is actually quite good on-piste at the moment. Needless to say there are very few snow-users about, so at least you won't have to queue.

I was speaking with kimberley locals...... they were in Calgary with the sole purpose of getting out of the fernie rain! They had lost almost a foot of snow to the rain this time last week

Whistler may be in deep doo-doo with its snow, but you wouldn't believe it if you read today's Guardian. Here's their report, posted on their website today.

I remember having the unfortunate experience in Aspen 1988 of bumping into a so-called Ski Journalist for The Times & again in Telluride 1995 a Journalist from The Telegraph. Both were complete funny fellows. I would go as far as saying a National Embarrassment.
It lead me to the conclusion even to this day with what I read, that these people have no clue about skiing & the people who go skiing.
They basically get a free holiday given to them and write any old SHITE.

stanton, that's tarring a number of ski writers with one brush. Some are superb (Adam Ruck, for instance, is highly knowledgeable and well worth reading), some aren't. I do agree, though, that the freebie culture can induce a world apart from the average punter's experience.
