Any resorts in Europe that have backpackers' hostels near enough to town/lifts?
Either going for a weekend at Easter or soon after if not too pricey and saving on accommodation is important for me...
What's Bad Gastein like, seems to be a hostel there for about EUR15 per night.

geepee, know the name or is it an HI one?
Seems like because of Easter most availability isn't til 20 April, so Zermatt might be better cos of height or will it be fine that time of year? Bit slushy lower down...

I stayed this season at a backpackers hostel in Zermatt. Reasonably close to the Klein Matterhorn lift, but about 15 mins from the station. It was also anything but cheap (but that goes for all of Zermatt too) at about CHF51 per night (over the Xmas period). It was rather unpleasantly basic too, as it had a pretty crap common room and allowing outdoors shoes into the dorms meant the floors were always covered in a thin film of mud. There is also an IYHF hostel there, but IIRC quite a way out of town.
I also stayed at the Engelberg IYHF. This was about a 10min walk out of the town, so not particularly convenient but not a major problem. Being IYHF it was a bit more regimented (curfew etc), but clean and well run (magnetic card locks for dorm doors), basic price about CHF36 IIRC, but additional charge of CHF6/night for nonmember.

Is Zell am See open at end April?
I assume Zermatt is...£35 per night for a hostel is a bit rich
& Bad Gastein's season?

The Club Alpin Francais have some - I have stayed in the one in Chamrousse, but there are others. The website appears to say that the Chamrousse one was closed for 07/08 but, if it is open, it's in a good ski-in/ski-out location, short(ish) bus ride from Grenoble.

GordonFreeman, i've not stayed at the hostel at Bad Gastein but they have a very good bar which I always go to when i'm in town . It's really close to the main lift and always has loads of people staying there - seams to be a really mixed crowd too. Bad Gastein's hostel is a Euro Youth Hostel and I think they have a good reputation, the rooms look nice on the website:

GordonFreeman, There's an old disused nuclear bunker that has been turned into a hostel - Verbier I think.
A friend of mine stayed in the Zell am Zee hostel and rated it very highly - he had a double en suite room to himself and is less than 5 mins to nearest lift and town centre..... nothing like roughing it is there!

Pretty sure there used to be a hostel in Tignes Les Brevières (or was it Les Boisses?). Remember chatting to a few people who were staying there skiing on the cheap...

les Brevs - chalet chardons - http://www.chaletchardons.com/ and I think there are a couple more
In Peisey-Vallandry & Nancroix (les arcs / paradiski) there are a few:-
http://www.chaletarc.co.uk/ - run by the irrepresable carole & martin - Alanm has stayed here a few times and I know a few other seasonaires that have stayed their this season - cheap for sure..
http://www.thefreeriderepublic.com/index.html - click on chalets and les arcs - in peisey rather than nancroix, and therefore linked by the 'lobster pot' lifts..

I've heard good things about the Bad Gastein hostel, and as Kersh wrote, it is just across the street from the gondola. It's probably the best placed accom in town. The season? I know it's on the website. Sport Gastein is open until May, I believe, with the rest of the areas closing shortly after Easter, I would guess. Again, it's on the website. Sport Gastein is up the road a ways, but there are buses leaving from right by where the hostel is.
I also met some people who were staying in the Engelberg hostel the first time I was there. They said it was a very nice hostel, but the location was not too convenient.

the verbier hostel is the Bunker - around 10-15 mins walk from the centre/lifts, and with 2 options for accommodation: i) in the old nuclear bunker, with very basic dormitory accommodation (don't expect too much sleep in here...), ii) the newer garden rooms, I think they are called, which are rooms shared between 3-4, with bathroom.
I would recommend the garden room option, you should get a decent sleep and be reasonably near the centre and lifts, and Verbier's advantage is that there is plenty of skiing high up eg the Mont Fort glacier, Mont Gele etc, which are still in good condition

Serre Chevalier has a youth hostel http://auberge-serre-chevalier.com/en/VisiteGuidee.php?fuaj=0
It is reasonably well located in Le Bez village above Villeneuve. Our mates stayed there while we poshed it in a hotel. They [2 blokes] shared a room for 4 with one other guy. They got full board including a packed lunch each day and skis thrown in. Deals look ok. There is an SNCF station in Briancon the main town, and regular buses up and down the valley.
Villeneuve also has a UCPA. Don't know about this.
