I am looking at buying a helmet and would like some help on what I should purchase, i.e. make etc?

Really? I was concerned, from a comment you made on another thread, that my cheap and cheerful helmet (with just padded bits over the ears and a fairly flimsy shell) was not doing a good enough job.

Dontlikeheights, ignore PJSki, who is a well known wind-up merchant. The only relevent fact to consider when buying a helmet is size. Will it fit through the door of your washing machine?

I spent a lot of time trying on helmets and banging my head on the wall in the shop to test protective capability. Don't worry if this seems odd, staff in most ski shops are used to this.

I suspect that most helmets in UK stores will meet one of the relevant standards for recreational skiing/boarding (CE1077, ASTM 2040 or better still the Snell RS98), so anything you buy would be deemed suitable. I've gone for a helmet which exceeds those standards, especially in terms of penetration by a sharp object. The helmet is used by some competitive skiers, and I choose it it's lightweight, it's a good fit albeit too warm, it was a good price and I like to be "over-insured" in some situations. If anyone wants to get a helmet that offers a bit more protection than standard recreational helmets looking to see what racers wear for the speed disciplines might be a good starting point. Otherwise any certified helmet should do, providing its a good fit.
