Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski Sunday - heliskiing / High Altitude

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I didn't see the entire episode but I guess it was a replay as it was on lastnight but it was a ski sunday episode about heliskiing and had Ed Leigh and Graham Bell climbing across ropes and off pisting. There were some avalanches during their downhill run, including one set off on a side slope that they didn't notice.
Surely the conditions can't have been great if 2 avalanches were set off during their down run?
Think it was the high altitude - Tyrolean traverse in New Zealand
and the one with Jodie Kidd doing off piste

Was it a full episode? I think that was the first one, but then I missed half of the others and couldn't get them on iplayer... If so I'll keep an eye out next week...

I seem to recall that the avalanche was on the completely opposite side of the arette which they were skiing, so in fact goes to prove that knowing the slope, its relative position and aspect, taking into account conditions, weather etc etc etc were actually right on the money.....

Yes, but the fact they were skiing the area is what set the avalanche off I'm sure or perhaps the helicopter in the air Smile
It was a big slab

GordonFreeman, No - possibly the helicopter, but not them being there

I'd have to watch it again but I don't think it was far away from them. They were in a "safe are" where they had all stopped, and the avalanche was set off on the side slope.

Yeah, but it was the part where Jodie Kidd was skiing with them off piste. All skiing close together, etc.
About 14mins onwards...

Its called terrain management, route selection. They were skiing down the ridge so which was not windloaded and also a shallow slope.

My point was that the avalanche risk must have been quite high that day - should they have been out at all?
I guess that part of the ridge is unlikely to go with the slab?
