After the sad news today that Natasha Richardson died as a result of her ski accident I am now not going skiing without one, but they seem so expensive, does anybody know where I can get a cheap one?

also check out lidl - they had some on sale late last year for about £15 and they're not bad. My local store still had some in recently.

However I find firring helmets almost as difficult as ski boots. Maybe i have a funny head. So I sugest try before you buy. Most I tried were not right for me so online shoping was not an option for me. If its not right you wont wear it or it may not offer its full protection benefits.
If your gonna be skiing again this year Ski Republic have a 2 for 1 offer on accesories. We bought helmets there this year (Les Menuires) 2 for €90 (Red and Cibe).

Is this actually true?
Are CE standards actually mandated by law for goods on sale in the UK?
Granted, most of the helmets on the market will comply with 1077 (it is the most basic one) but seeking a cheap one biases the prospective purchaser to find the exceptions.

Also look as good in terms of quality & style as any other
Helmet I've seen in the £50-£100 bracket minus the fancy
Ski makers name, they r fab & don't look or feel any less
Than the ones in ski shops for 5x the price.

No federal regulation exists, so 'conform to CPSC' is just advertising fluff meaning
"we haven't been sued, we haven't had a massive string of public failures, and we claim to meet at least one voluntary standard by some other issuing body"

comprex, I'm not sure about that logic. The AFTM testing at least guarantees some energy absorption testing has been carried out and a minimum level has to be reached in several directions. Maybe this is not as dilligently applied as say fire extinguishers or smoke detectors but but that the voluntary standard is recognised and conformed to at all is a bonus over it not being. Secondly, if the helmets I bought for my children meet three voluntary standards, they [b]should/b] be at least as effective as mine that I bought three years ago which conforms to only one voluntary standard.

Not quite that simple. These are minimum standards and not very high. Some of the more expensive helmets will exceed these standards by a significant margin. It's the same story with mountain bike helmets. The better ones on the market offer significantly more protection than others, even if they all pass the relevant safety standards. I'm not saying that all expensive helmets are automatically better, as pricing is also fashion and branding conscious. But I would say that not all helmets offer equal protection, just because they pass a safety standard.

Snowbunny84, you need to try before you buy as shapes & sizing varies considerably. There's also the problem that stores only tend to have one or two manufacturers in stock so the choice is limited.
I'd recommend waiting until the autumn & go to the ski show at either the NEC or London as that's were by far the largest choice will be & they'll still be bargains to be had. If you already have goggles take them with you to check they're compatible.
