Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

skiing in december europe/US?

 Poster: A snowHead

Hello,

I would like to go skiing in mid-December this year, and am wondering where is the best place to go snow-wise out of Europe, US (eg. Colorado/Utah) or maybe Whistler? Perhaps those of you who have skied at this time could help me out?
I am probably intermediate-ish level, can parallel turn basically. Have only been skiing in Aus and NZ so don't have any experience skiing o/s.
My main criteria is snow and a good range of runs for my level- don't want to spend all that money if there is no snow. Don't really care about pretty scenery etc..., decent nightlife would be good but not essential.

I have scanned through some posts here and it looks like US seems to be more assured of snow? I wouldn't mind going to US but is there anywhere in Europe that might be good as I haven't been there before?

Cheers

swizzle, welcome to snowHeads. Good early season snow can never be guaranteed, but the usual advice mostly holds true: whatever country you decide on it's best to head high. Resorts with a glacier offer the best hope of snow if is unseasonably warm.

I'm not sure how Europe and North America compare for early season snow on average. I think this season Europe got off to a much better start, so even if you hedge your bets and go for a resort with the best record of early season snow you might end up disappointed. I've skied in November and December for the last few years in Tignes and Val d'Isere and have been blessed with good conditions for what I wanted. Here is an entry from my blog of conditions in Tignes on 2nd December. It was a good day!

One option might be to wait until close to the date of your trip and then follow the best snow. That early in the season it's easy to find accommodation, even at the last minute.

Seconded. (Though last minute flights could complicate things).
