Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Car Hire in Geneva - strange question being asked !

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Never noticed before but trying to book car hire from Geneva and keep getting asked if I want it from Geneva France or Geneva Switzerland !!

Whats the difference ? I have booked flights for the last week of this month (30th March) and am going to book accommodation last minute dependant on the snow conditions. Does it matter what car hire location I select (assuming they are both in the same airport !) ??

Book from Swiss side! You will get snow chains as standard in the car (or should do as it's the law in Switzerland) without having to pay extra and one of those little stickers in the window so you can use Swiss roads without having to pay a year road tax! They are both in the same airport, but you'll come out from your flight Swiss side anyway...ignore the French bit!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

rooney, this one has been done to death on this forum, try a search and you will find out the merits of either.

The airport is the same, it's shared between the 2 countries as it is built partly on French territory. The main entrance from the city/motorway is on the Swiss side, for the French side there is a customs road that leads into France near Ferney-Voltaire.

Basically, French cars are often slightly cheaper but won't have the Swiss motorway tax sticker or any winter equipment as standard, whereas the Swiss cars MAY include these depending on supplier. There is also the issue of the circuitous route needed to access the French side when picking up/dropping off. The issue is further complicated by a re-arrangement of the car hire parking on the Swiss side, which is a (payable?) shuttle bus ride/long walk away.

Your decision will probably be based on the difference in cost, your final destination (France or Switzerland), whether you need winter equipment and the motorway sticker.

Hope this helps. snowHead

Overall, Joanne's right, the difference in cost won't be large enough to make it worthwhile fiddling about with the French side.

rooney, there is one advantage booking on teh french side, if you book thru Holiday Autos anyway, and that is that they allow a second named driver for free
