Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The new Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire - which will be the closest snowdome to London - is scheduled to open in May. 250 staff are being sought, with a wide variety of jobs on offer.

This report from SnowboardClub.co.uk

I don't think that an opening date exists yet, but I imagine that it's snowing inside (the photo gallery and live project feed don't have evidence of that).

The website still says ...
Quote:
The entire project will be complete by early April which includes all systems fully tested and all staff training completed. We then open our Alpine doors to you at the end of April 2009, have your skis and boards at the ready.

... but it seems that this has been put back slightly.

I'd love to know the thought process that went into deciding to build another snowdome in between London and London's primary snowdome, Milton Keynes.

I can't imagine that they will have made any friends at MK, and it is still a fair trek for anyone who lives south of central london.

And if you look at their location on a Google Maps [St Albans Hill, Hemel Hempstead, Herts, HP3 9NH], its absolutely useless for anyone but people driving there.

I'll be sticking with MK!

As far as I can recall, the Hemel site (which is the previous plastic slope site) is next to a big leisure and Tesco complex, so I'd imagine that there's lots of bus transport to that location from the nearest train station from London. This is what the website says ...
Quote:
The Snow Centre at Hemel Hempstead is very close to the M1 (jCool and M25 (j20) motorways. Hemel also has a main line train station connection London Euston to Birmingham, Manchester and through to Scotland.
London Luton airport is 25 minutes.
Local bus services stop outside The Snow Centre.
Car parking for 290 vehicles. There will also be parking bays for coaches.

I couldn't see a map on the website, which seems odd. And not to provide bus numbers seems equally odd.

I only found the above info via the FAQs, which is also a good way of not telling people where you are!

David Goldsmith, I looked equally hard and found this address:

St Albans Hill, Hemel Hempstead, Herts, HP3 9NH

If you look it up on Google Maps it shows that the trains station is probably a good walk away, pretty long if your carrying ski/board gear.

I'm sure there is a bus, but it is another step and another bit to pay.

buckers, it looks like it's 1.5 miles from the station.

But saying that, XScape must be around that from MK station.

Given the generally poor condition of MK and their atitude towards "proper" slope users (i.e. closing half of the slope for tubing) then Hemel has to be worth a go.

perhaps that htey could make shedloads of money by having a much bigger pool of skiers nearer to their facility...

"london's Primary snowdome" huhh? Does London have a "primary" football stadium, cinema , etc.

FlyingStantoni, You right, they're probably identical in terms of walking distance.

My main objection was the location.

I'm sure they looked at this from a completely monetary point of view, as one should when starting a larage business such as this, but I tend to live in a skier's world, where they should have taken into account that Milton Keynes is in the north, therefore they should build their's in the south, so as to provide an equal ski opertunity to all of London.

No, London has dozens of football stadiums, however it only has one(!) snow dome, the one closest to it. Therefore it is London's primary snowdome!

buckers, i think planning permission is the big hurdle, plans have been developed for domes at Lakeside in Essex, Wycombe and the south coast, but fell down due to planning knockbacks.

cant wait for london's "secondary" dome and would love a few more. Toofy Grin

The thought process was Hemel Ski Centre was an existing dry slope, that needing seriously updating. Did they do that using Snowflex and leave it as a dry slope or build an indoor snow facility. Seeing as snowdomes are so popular and MK being it's nearest rival, with people from London already driving up the M1 to use it. It made sense to build a dome on the existing site, easy links from M25/M1/A41, train and bus links. Why would someone from London want to drive another 30 miles up the M1 to go to MK to ski in an inferior facility?

MK I'm sure feel threatened by Hemel's presence, to the extent that they've already tried to restrict their instructors contracts to prevent them from working at Hemel, plus the various price incentives that they've been offering. There's no love lost, but who cares?

Hemel is 20 mins up the M1 from NW London. If things go well, Hemel will not be the only slope, as there are expansion plans beyond.

The catchment area within an hours drive for Hemel is enormous in terms of population. Living south of central London, sure it's a trek, but you're prepared to go 30 miles further already. Puzzled
I'm sure MK will be a lot quieter for you once Hemel opens it doors.

So, on that basis, how does MK feel about becoming Londons "secondary" dome. Of course if Wycombe ever gets built then MK will only be the "tertiary" dome. wink Toofy Grin
