At least 17 people were injured when a chairlift collapsed in Andalucian ski resort of Sierra Nevada this morning. The chairs fell from a height of between 6m and 8m. Each of the chairs can carry four people. Snow and high winds in the area have complicated the rescue operation...
Sierra Nevada boasts around 90km of piste and has had a record number of visitors this season but there have been arguments locally about the capability of the infrastructure to handle the increased traffic.

Yikes! Apparently nobody seriously hurt, must have had a soft landing! I like the way they say the rest of the resort is operating fine, I assume they were saying that about all of the resort just before the chairs collapsed!

Liam, Accidents have always occured, however previously they didn't make the international news, with the web that's changed which means you hear about them more frequently, in reality modern saftey systems have probably decreased the number of incidents

Thank god for that.! is it me or have there been a lot of chair lift trouble this year? I hate heights but do have that "want to jump" from a lift when i'm skiing, and now (unlike the first year) am fine on chairlifts....Gondolas however.....i hate them! Probably far too much time watching "Where Eagles Dare" as a kid.

Ouch, i'm glad there were no serious injuries.
looks like the whole cable wheel runner thingy broke off the pylon, i expected to see that the cable had popped out from between the sets of wheels. This happend in borovets on a button drag when my friend fell off, the cable ended up coming off the top drive wheel and the lower pylon on the downhill side. nobody else was on the lift at the time.

The situation must have changed a bit, now there are 23 injured and some have been hospitalised...
"All the injured were first attended to in the Pradollano health center at the ski centre. They were all adults and two of the most seriously hurt were finally evacuated by helicopter to hospital in Granada when the weather allowed later in the day.
There are four others whose injuries are described as serious."

Just saw reference to this on another website. Have ridden this lift many times and due back there in April. Very shocked. The slightly saving grace is that it is relatively low as the video shows, and they have had a good amount of snow. I also hope all those involved make a speedy recovery. Because the resort is high and prone to very high winds which result in regular lift closures I believe they check the lifts regularly. Just relieved it was a Monday out of high season - over the Christmas holiday the resort was heaving and I suspect it would have involved many more people.

OOI, how could this happen if the machinery is checked regularly or does the inspection not cover weaknesses within the structures and mechanics?
