Poster: A snowHead
|
I have just booked a place in the Maurienne valley for our Easter break. I have skied Val Cenis, Bonneval and Orelle before but do not know the other resorts. I intend to get a multi resort pass and ski several resorts .
Which ones are likely to offer the best skiing?
I am with families including two teenage boys they are quite keen on moderately steep mogul type runs but basically we are looking for variety. Thought Valfrejus looks good and possibly Valloire or La Norma?
Thanks for any information.

Hi we went for a week to Aussios last year and had a great time the slopes were well groomed although compared to Val Cenis the ski area is much smaller. The run off the back of the highest lift is more challenging and steep and you can ski off piste under the chair lift. The year before we skied Termignon. Again quite small but so quite we had the whole slopes virtually to ourselves at easter! and had a great time. We are off to Valfrejus this year which looks like a step up from Aussois in size etc. so really looking forward to it as the snow looks to be holding up really well.

T Bar,
Valloire is a good base, I spend quite a lot of time there and think its by far the best ski area and the nicest village. It has 2-3 time more skiing than the other resorts you mention and a better lift system, although still noy in the same league as the mega resorts....

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

JimSearle,
Cheers, I have booked my accommodation already, and am looking at getting the ski pass for the whole Maurienne so am wondering which individual places to ski as even with eight days I cannot get them all and will probably spend a couple of days in at least two places. I really enjoyed both Val Cenis and Bonneval last visit.
Valloire is definately on my list of possibilities, does it ski well at Easter? and are there decent northish facing slopes on or off piste?

T Bar,
About 70% of the pistes are above 2000m so its pretty reliable for late season snow, and we had a powder day last year in the first week of April. Setaz Mountain in all north facing and holds the snow well. Grand Plateau is west facing but all above 2000m so again is reliable well into April. The Valmienier side is generally sunnier than the Valloire side so more prone to bare patches but prob has some of the nicest high open bowls if there is fresh snow. There are also som epic runs from the Grand Plateau back into Valmienier 1800m, just drop of on the black piste coterieux and then follow you nose, its all pretty safe although quite steep. If the snow is really good, and it has been this year, you can follow the cret de la reve Gondola off piste all the way back into Valloire from Grand Plateau, the easiest route is keeping to the left of the pylons. There is also some nice off piste to be had in the vernys valley following the line of the vernys lift, and as it is quite out of the way it stays untracked for ages! Enjoy...

JimSearle,
Very helpful, thanks very much.
Looking forward to it already, hoping conditions remain decent for the rest of the season, though doubtless there will be warm spells.
