Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Did British student enjoy good time (ski race) because of Chinese all-you-can-eat buffet?

A British student in the Chinese ski resort of Yabuli is reported to be the first person to compete in the first FIS-accredited downhill ever held in the country.

John Campbell from Edinburgh drew bib No.1 in the race last Friday, featured in the University Winter Games, an initiative by Heilongjiang province to bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Campbell had this to say after his pioneering effort:

Quote:
"The accommodation is amazing, it's a five star hotel or something so we've been making the most of the all-you-can-eat buffet. I think downward momentum was with me."

This report from Reuters UK

Campbell placed 18th in the race.

If he hadn't eaten the buffet, what result would he have achieved? [similar scientific questions welcome]

He also says 'five star hotel'.

Big difference between 'five star hotel' and cheaper 'all-you-can-eat-Chinese buffet' as offered in this country. In most of the latter you may find it best to eat the vegetarian options.

Ordinary Chinese lunchs are often reasonably priced anyway. I assume in China it would be even cheaper.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Latchigo, we have a very good local chain called Cosmo - who have cracking buffets - mainly chinese, but with Thai and Malay and Japanese influences, Teppenyaki chefs sometimes.

Probably not good enough for metropolitan sophisticates though

China has overexpanded its tourist industry. The all-you-can-eat buffet is a 5 star standard not the usual take-away equivalent we get in UK. Last March I went for a sight-seeing 4-day trip in China with some friends staying in all 5-star hotels. The HK$ 899 (or £90 at today's exchange rate) cost of the entire trip, including all meals and transport, can't even pay for staying a normal 5-star hotel for one night in Europe.

The all-you-can-eat buffet is also common in many 5 star hotels in the Middle East at prices we would consider low in UK but not locally. The standard of the Chinese 5-star buffet is on par with those I found in other Asia countries, say Hilton Kuala Lumpur.
