IME the cheap ones are not very good. Just depends on what quality you want? If you just want to create the odd 30 sec web clip, then something like the Oregon all-in-one units might be acceptable. But you're looking at a fair bit more money for something decent. Some very good reviews on this website at all price levels:-

What do people do with footage shot by helmet cams?

rob and sharon,
I bought one of those oregon cameras and they are difficult to program because the lcd programming screen (there is no viewing screen) is minute and the rubber switches are extremely difficult to operate. Then when you have it going you cannot check whats happening because unless you have a very unusual anatomy, you cannot see the control panel because it's on the camera on your head...........
That said, the picture quality is not bad so if you are only after a bit of fun it might do, but don't be disapointed when you do the run that is the pinnacle of your achievment only to find that when you get to the bottom the camera switched itself off after 4 seconds.

I've run a helmet cam for a few years now. Got my kit from company called RF Concepts.
Teamed with an old Sony camcorder which lives in my backpack. Will work with any recording device which can accept an analogue input.
Have caught some great stuff over the years, including some of my very best falls

Piece together the best bits into short home movies. It's a bit self indulgent but watching them brings back great memories. Also make the odd youtube clip or DVD to share with friends.

If you happen to need a new mp3 player as well then you could get an archos and a camera to go with it. Thats what i've got. You can get archos' own cam but i've heard that's not too hot. I've got a 4kam camera to go with it. The camera cost £99 with a mic. An extra battery pack (not essential) cost me £20 and my archos 404 cost £100 off ebay with all the bits i needed to get it running (travel adaptor and AV cables). Works pretty well but is a bit of a faff getting it form your bag everytime you want to start or stop it but i got about 2.5 hours in one go the other day which isn't bad considering the cold as well. Here's some footage from the summer, http://www.pinkbike.com/video/37301/ The raw footage quality is a bit better but the compression has reduced the quality. The camera was a bit wonky too but that's due to the muppet that set it up.

For me a remote switch is a must on any helmet cam system.

Yeah it would be pretty useful but the only camera that fits the archos and has external controls as far as i know is archos' own which as i said is supposedly not that great and also it runs off the players own battery which could rinse it pretty quick. I haven't used it though so i can't be certain.

el nombre, Think you're right about the Archos camera not being that special. As far as I know it's a Sony lens, but one of their cheapest ones. It's a shame as otherwise it's not a bad solution. But I really couldn't live without a remote, especially for skiing.

I got my bullet cam from RF Concepts too. Dog Cam are also good. I use a Canon mini DV camcorder to record it.
Works well and if you have an old camcorder with AV input, its the best and cheapest option.

bar shaker, I agree and that's what I use too (Sony mini DV camcorder with a top quality Sony bullet cam). But it's almost impossible to buy a new camcorder with AV input now. Lanc remote inputs are equally rare now too on consumer camcorders.

You know it makes sense.

My advice would be don't get one - you're not Graham Bell, you're having a nice holiday and if you ski around with a camera attached to your helmet you just look ridiculous.
Just enjoy your holiday and don't become one of those people who bores their friends with the footage when you get home - they don't care what it looked like when you skied down that white snowy hill. If they cared they would go skiing themselves.

Yeah. And don't take a camera either, you're not David Bailey, you're having a holiday and if you ski around taking photos you just look ridiculous. Sheesh, you're a ray of sunshine aren't you?

If I had a helmet cam (I don't because I can't justify the cost - even to myself), I wouldn't be recording to bore others, but rather for my own memories.
Although i have to say, I usually look for YouTube footage of resorts I'm going to, between when I book and when I actually travel (just to get me in the mood), and many of those have been shot by other people on holiday.

That's not advice, you just sound like a technophobic old fart. As you're clearly not interested in helmet cams then feck off this thread eejoit.
