In an ageist age, it's interesting to read about an 87-year-old ski instructor still employed and going strong:
Paul Goszyk began skiing in his native Poland in the 1920s, was captured and imprisoned by the Nazis in WW2, and took up instructing in a US resort in 1963.
45 years later, he's still teaching (and seems impressively committed) at Snow Trails Ski Resort in Ohio. With a helmet on.
This report from Mansfield News Journal.
Quote: |
Goszyk's first teaching experience came after World War II while staying at a camp for displaced refugees in Germany. He was away on a one-week pass when he met a group of ski troops with the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division ... It wasn't long before they asked for his help honing their skills. |
What a career!

Th way I read it skiing is more dangerous than the Nazis as one could survive without wearing a helmet!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

clive5, the 2 pictures of the guy wearing a helmet are the clue to the fact he wears one.

espri,
Do you mean to be able
(1) To wear a helmet?
(2) To be come a skiing instructor?
or
(3) To survive a Nazi capture ?

PJSki, The point that I was making was that it was not relevant to the article. I can see he has a helmet on

The photos are integral to the article: they illustrate it. Perhaps he wears the helmet to maintain warmth of the brain (an essential life-sustaining function).

espri,
I know your intention but that is how we make fun here. I just couldn't help it.
I belong to the group of skiers who don't want to be told to do things. I view a helmet is to protect oneself against one's own mistakes or mistakes from other piste users.
Nowadays I ski so slowly, choose resorts people seldom go and on deserted runs. Thus I don't bother with the helmet. My last black run in Diavolezza in St Moritz there was only myself for the whole piste, not a soul to be seen. When I went back into the red runs I only encountered 2 to 3 other skiers.
I would wear a helmet to ski in France during mid term breaks.

You know it makes sense.

I wonder if 87-year-old Paul Goszyk started wearing a helmet when he was 87? (birthday present?)

David Goldsmith,
He might have received a promotion payout from the helmet manufacturer to wear one. He gears look newish to me.

Nowhere. It's a photo (worth 1000 words, apparently) next to the article.
Have we done this before?

I thought it might be helpful for people to know that if they discuss helmets for 87 years ...

The oldest ski instructor at Whistler is Russ White who turned 88 on January 15th. And, incidentally, he also wears a helmet when he skis.
