According to the Consumer Affairs Editor of "London's Quality Newspaper" - the Evening Standard - Ellis Brigham in Kensington High Street failed to open yesterday, due to snow.
Here's Jonathan Prynn's exclusive: The day I skied Les Trois Parcs de Londres

Even in these recessionary times if there is one thing that Kensington High Street can provide it is decent ski shops.
Unfortunately none of the staff at Ellis Brigham had apparently managed to battle through the white hell. Seems odd that six inches of snow can bring a ski emporium to a grinding halt, but this is London.
They are made of sterner stuff at next door Snow & Rock, where I was kitted out with boots, skis and poles. |
Check out the photo. Comments welcome.
I'm wondering what the hard men of Manchester (EB's nerve centre) make of this story? !

It seems that they are in good company. I skied in Les Arcs today with the SKOGB rep Tony. At the top of the Arpette lift he rang the office to enrol me as a member but could only get an answering service. Apparently The Ski Club Of Great Britain offices are closed because of too much snow!
How funny is that!

Do we know of any snowdomes that failed to open due to snow?

Tamworth snowdome would never have the problem of too much snow if my memory serves me well...

Not as bad as this one:

Council services including bin collections were also expected to be disrupted today. The council run Alpine Ski Centre in Southampton was also forced to close in a strange twist as snow on the slopes was deemed too dangerous by health and safety chiefs.
The snow was judged to make the speeds of people using the artificial slopes to quick.

It's that bleeding elfin safety culture again, innit?

What! Snow would surely make a dry-slope safer...
Pillocks.

You know it makes sense.

skisimon, it is indeed beyond a joke! I think one of the best health and saftey rules we have at work is when we weld pipe. We weld plastic pipes and the machine that does it has an alert/warning alarm everytime it opens or closes (due to it being high pressure hydraulics quite capable of removing fingers) but the buzzer is apparently to loud, so we have to wear ear defenders, as such we can't hear the buzzer at all anymore.

Dry slopes are relatively steep because the surface has much more friction than snow. Put snow on top of one and it becomes a steep, narrow piste. Would you want to teach inexperienced skiers on it? I know I wouldn't!

rob@rar, I agree that inexperienced skiers shouldn't be on it, but surely there would have been a way to open it to experienced people, perhaps for members or regulars only, or only for people who brought their own boots and skis?

Maybe, but then you're into some faceless bureaucrat making judgements about people's skiing ability. It would be a whole new can of worms...
I understand the frustration and the irony, but I think it's easy to overlook the difference between plastic and snow and what impact that would have on the ability of most skiers to control their descent.

ousekjarr, how about people who had those little booklets your given in most countries saying your skiing ability?

long time ago when I used to go to sheffield dry slope loved it when it had snow on - really quick

Surely the main problem is the patchiness. Skiing along on snow then brought to a crunching halt. Not good.
