Hi
we are driving to Arc 1950 soon
please can anyone tell me if it is cheaper to buy the family lift pass in advance or wait until I get to the resort?
Also, any tips on parking or shopping - ie where is the nearest reasonably priced supermarket that we acn stop at on route?
thanks

markandjayne, Welcome. Good choice of palce to stay (though be warned very, very expensive place to eat out and drink).
To answer questions. No cheaper to buy in advance.
Shopping. If you want to cry, shop in resort. Alternatively you pass by 2 supermarkets in Bourg Saint Maurice. Buy everything you need there.
Parking. Who are you staying wiht/renting of. You normally pay about 75 euro for underground parking in 1950. Worth it as car is secure and no digging out issues on last day.
Questions for you?
When are you arriving (will explain when answered as you can get stuck in huges queues if timed wrong).
Are you driving over or flying?
Assume you are going self catering?

Hi

we are driving and have rented self catering from Radisson ( an owner friend got us a discount)
we drive from Calais Friday morning (before half term _ I know it will be awful but what can you do when you need to stick to school hols!)
plan to stay somewhere in Ain region |Firday night and get to Les Arcs Sat am.
Will be strapping the families boards and skis to our new roof bars, hoping not to need the new snow chains and crossing our fingers!
My wife and I have skiied La Plagne before and ventured into Les Arcs - we cant wait to go back!
appreciate your help
cheers

markandjayne, Check at the Radission if they have underground parking.
Driving in Saturday morning 1/2 term will be bad. Genuinely drive in as early (before 8am) as you can. Drop your car of and you get an extra days skiing in?
As for shopping. Personaly on the Saturday I would just head to resort asap. Bring enough food to last Saturday/Sunday and paln to drive down to Bourg after skiing Sunday/Monday. Its a 30 minute drive downa nd will save you a fortune on resort shopping.
Leaving, get away before 7am or leave till after 6pm.

Shell, Under 6's get free lift passes, everyone in ski school will get a pass anyway? Are you going self catering?

Family Pass is same price whether purchased in resort or online before hand from what I've seen

thefatcontroller, I don't think ESF includes passes in lesson prices? Not from my experience - although I may have paid twice! But recall having conversation with instructors about what pass we had bought for kids

Boris, Sorry I meant that I assumed Shell's question was in relation to the 5 year old. Everyone taking lessons will have to have bought passes anyway and they are no included in the lessons costs. They could be using Spirit 1950 and not ESF.

so will we have to have bought our pass before we go to ski school? this has also been booked with Crystal - it doesnt mention it anywhere in the brochure and we havnt got our tickets yet.

You will need lift passes, check what you ordered with Crystal.
How are you getting from train to Arc1950? To shop in 1950 or 2000 or eat out all week without using a town supermarket will be expensive.

markandjayne, Shell, welcome to our village. I too am an owner, you'll have a great time.
Radisson are part of the underground cark parking facility... if you are using one of your owner friends 's leasback weeks, you'll be able to use their car park pass. ( they will tell you how and where to collect it after you have got into the car park for the first time).
If not, then you want to get a weekly pass to allow easy access into and out of the carpark - as thefatcontroller say, aim to pop into Bourg for your shopping - it is considerably cheaper, and you will pay for the petrol in the first two minutes in the supermarket! E.g. cornmflakes in the village €3.65, in the SuperU in Bourg €1.79 And don't think the supermarket in 2000 is any cheaper , I am assured it isn't! If weather is reasonable then it is 22km each way and about 35 -40 mins.
To get a weekly pass, take the ticket from the machine on the way in, to allow barrier up. Then at some stage ( ther's no hurry) take your ticket to the Efia booth near the exit and they will take make the exchange for you ( Oh, and charge you the €79 as well...) - but it is easier and cheaper to do that than pay for each exit and re-entry. You can buy on line prior to arriving if that makes it easier for you.

Two S/mkts on the road from Bourg to Les Arcs: on your LHS as you come off the roundabout that you takes to Les Arcs rather than Val D'Isere - its always difficult directing by "it's the last raoundabout in town...", but you'll know you missed them if you get to the "aire de chainage".
Shell, coming by train is the smart thing to do, but you will get nailed for supermarket prices in the village. Unfortunately, the supermarkets in Bourg are realistically too far from the funicular to make it a viable option to pop down and load up with a walk. Perhaps make friends with markandjayne !! Eating out: Valentinos , the Pizza place in Refuge du Montagnard, offer reasonably priceed food (we ate for €110 for 4 of us, inc wine), but beer in the bars ... you'll have to rely on Happy Hours if you don't fancy a second mortgage. La bollee crepiere won;t necessarily fill you up for a full evening meal, but is a nice tea for the kids.
RE Ski passes, unless you are a complete mileage muncher, you won't need the paradiski pass for just a week - stick with the Les Arcs one. If you really want to go across the VE, buy the discoverte pass or the daily extension. I've been going for 6 years, for 3 weeks a year, and have found little reason other than adventure to pop over. (you'll find it tricky enough to get back to pick up smalls at lunchtime if they are in Ski school, or indeed get over there after ski school anyway).
If you have any other questions, post on the thread, I'm pretty sure I can answer most things.

Crystal transfer us from the train to village - so it seems i try and take as much stuff as possible.
We were in Lapland for 2 weeks over christmas and the prices there have gone through the roof.
Supermarket - 3 euros bread, small milk 1.5 , 6 tins larger 12 euros,
Burger and fries in a bar 18 euros, medium pint 6 euros.
Are these prices similar ?
Im hoping we all get ski school in the morning as we want the afternoons free to ski as a family - hubby advanced skier so lucky thing will have half a day to himself

You know it makes sense.

Shell, it seems you have met the Arc1950 supermarket prices!
iirc burger and fries @ Melis Snack will be less than that (but you'll have to est them back in the apartment or on the exterior tables in the street), beer will be more, 7 - 8 EUR depending on establishment. Au Tour de Vins is nice , and you'll meet many owners in there (it is an 'unofficial' club house) , but not the cheapest (€18-€20 per bottle) unless you persuade George to give you a discount (in my case it tends to be a volume discount...) , and only does, surprise surprise, vin.
The bread shop l'Arc Dore is €1 for croissants and pain au chocolat for breakfast, I think baguettes €1.50. Open by 7:30 for fresh cakes and the bread every day (cue Homer Simpson drool), great to send daddy and the children out early to gauge the temparature.
It is very, very easy to get back into the apartments for lunch ( when they say ski in-out , they really mean it) , so we tend to pick SmallW up from ski school, then have soup and baagettes before venturing out again. Convenient (you are there anyway), quick and cost effective.
And packet soup is easy to carry from the UK!
You can also make decisions on afternoon activities: skiing, swimming, sledging, jigsaws, TV, or whatever at that point, depending whereabouts on the tiredeness => enthusiasm spectrum the family is.

Thanks Jim
loads of useful stuff - I will get the car park pass when we get there i think - sadly it is not my friends free week! He is tere for a couple of weeks at Easter.
I have 3 kids 9, 11, 14 all good skiers so the family appetite is pretty enormous - I will probably be in the supermrket on a regular basis!
Our reservation says ' Auberge Jerome' - is this this building we will be in do you know? I have heard there are several 'buildings'?
The kids have ski lessons with spirit 1950
Cant wait to get going!
Cheers for the assistance and info!

markandjayne, Yes AJ is one of 8 buildings in the village, Refuge du Montagnard, Hameau du Glacier, Prince de Cime, Auberge Jerome, Manoir Savoie, Source de Marie, Jardins de la Cascade and Chalet de Lys. Have a look at http:www/arc1950.com for a plan of the village and see where you are. Actually its a good source of general info for all.

markandjayne, ... typical - the first one, and its a question I can't answer! Well, I can... It depends... Some do have an oven, some don't (ours for example...although we do have a good grill in the microwave). I think that AJ might be all oven equipped as it is building #5, and by then the combi thingys were a lot more prevalent.
Try emailing info.arc1950@radissonsas.com which should get to the concierge , and who may be more use. Head hanging in shame...

Hi,
For shopping, take J27 off the N90 in Albertville, you'll see the Geant hypermarket on your left for chep food. Their 'Casino' cafe does cheap rustic grub (only a canteen but surprisingly good tuck). There's a Decathlon nearby for last-minute (and cheap) ski wear.
