Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Connecting Flight to go with a TO (scaredy solo skier)

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi all

Our ski trip for March was doomed. First MrRibena lost his job (boo) but then he got another one (hurray) but now we can't go on the flippin trip that I was agonising about whether we could afford or not (boo).

So I was going to chance going solo (first time) and fancied Austria (been a few times and still love it the most and it's cheap and I speak the lingo kinda). I keep hearing about Saalbach, so that I might chance that and found a catered chalet with Nielsons that takes singles and hopefully I'll meet someone or other or there will be snowHead s there. If all comes to all I suppose I could join group lessons but that's a bit of an expensive hire-a-mate option!

Nielsons don't go from Ireland, so I was thinking I'd buy the Gatwick holiday which seem much more reasonable than Irish packages (if they let Irish people buy English hols) and then get a flight from Ireland to Gatwick allowing (say) 5 hours before on the way out and something similar on the way back.

So is this connecting flight idea mental or has anyone else ever done it successfully?

Thanks
Rebecca

Sounds fantastic to me Rebecca. All the best last minute deals seem to all fly out from british airports so i may follow your lead in the future. I say go for it but just leave enough time that a 2 hour delay leaving Ireland wont mess you up. If you do go for it make sure you post how it works out. You would have to be very unlucky for it to go south on you. We're Irish... we're suppose to be lucky! Very Happy

I assume you've checked out deals with Ski McNeill : http://www.skimcneill.com/ - they always seem to have some decent ex Dublin deals?

MissRibena, I would go for it. And if it's any help, I remember being scared as hell the first time I went solo. Best thing I ever did. I had an amazing time and people in the chalet were really friendly and helpful. Somebody always asked me to ski with them, so I was never short of ski buddies. Have been on 3 more solo trips since that one and had an absolute blast each time - with the same friendly reception and offers. You won't regret it - but MrRibena might, if you have a better time without him Toofy Grin Laughing

Also try Directski.com have Dublin depart packages to Saalbach half-board from about €600 - good luck !

I've just (on Tuesday) booked a last minute jobby with a TO and didn't have to pay a single supplement - nor am I sharing a room. If you wait till the last minute, and aren't fussy about where you go, then they'll often waive them.

Try posting on chaletsdirect.com solutions forums just before you want to go and say you want a holiday with no single supplement. Of course it may be all sold out by then, bt probably not.

MissRibena, unless you're flying BA from Ireland to Gatwick (never the cheapest), both flights should use the South terminal, which will keep things simple. If you do use BA, you'll need to get the monorail between the terminals (which doesn't take long and is clearly signposted).

Thanks everyone. I'm feeling way more confident about it now. When I think about it, it's unlikely (fingers crossed) that I'd miss the outgoing flight as Ryanair et al are fairly punctual especially into airports like Gatwick. And if I missed the flight on the way back, another one would be easy enough get but to be honest, a stay over in London would be a fab end to the holiday anyway.

I'd definitely go for a last minute deal if this wasn't my first solo adventure but I've persuaded myself that a chalet environment with people sitting together for meals would be an easier way to break the ice. Also, the TO's usually do ski-escorting which would be another way to team up with others.

MissRibena, definitely nowt to worry about going solo. I've done it 6 times, no lessons or anything, there's always people to ski with if you hook up with the TO groups. This season I'm still going solo as always but meeting up with some people I skied with in Kitzbühel last season. Best of both worlds in my book...

Regarding the airport transfer thing, I doubt it will be an issue. And even if it is, most travel insurance policies will cover you for missed connections. I haven't done it with skiing before, but I have done it for long haul and other than a 20 minute mad dash from one end of Dubai airport to the other to make a connection from a delayed landing, I've had no problems at all...

Enjoy... Very Happy
