Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Long weekend, do it yourself

With this year's ski holiday done and dusted already (Tignes, amazing) we were thinking of organising a long weekend skiing. We were thinking of driving from london all night on a wednesday or thursday to a french resort and hiring a self catering apt.

Is this feasible? Anyone any tips on money saving, and what resorts would be best for this kind of thing.

1 weeks skiing is just not enough these days!!!!!!!!!!!!

Peter Griffin, there are a few companies who specialise in long-weekends, all inclusive if I recall, a bit of googling will track them down. The travel, passes ski hire etc won't be an issue, where you may struggle is accommodation. Mainly as apartments tend to be let weekly.

Depending on price, you could hire for a week of course and just stay as long as you require.

You may find a friendly SH who can help here, if they have availability.

Certainly possible to do - there are those here who have managed day-trips Shocked

Perfectly feasible to do it. I try to do a long weekend every year, flying not driving mind you.

Top tips are avoid peak season. Secondly book accomodation late (perhaps the Monday of the week you plan to go). The tourist offices of most resorts are usually good and you can usually get good prices for a few days.

If the forecast is looking good, Scotland is also a good option. You could do London to Glencoe in a little over 8 hours.

We do any day arrival 3, 6 and 9 day breaks in Les Coches, Paradiski, price depending on when you want to go but ranging from £99 - £139 with a £30 supplement for Fri and Sat nights (so over a weekend ranging from £129 - £199) for three nights accommodation in a catered chalet. In some instances we can add a day or two depending on other bookings.

WE offer a transfer service from Geneva at £12.50 per person each way, usually collecting around 19:00 (or later) on the way out, and leaving resort around 16:00/17:00 on the way back to serve flights after 20:00.

Accommodation includes hot late supper on arrival, breakfast and afternoon tea with homemade cakes daily and a three course dinner on other nights of your stay. Have a look http://www.mountainsunltd.com/short_breaks/view/short-break

Also our spring special offer in Tignes Les Boisses starts 19th April - £79 for three nights catered accommodation including set time Geneva transfers! (weekend supplement £15 per night Fri and Sat). http://www.mountainsunltd.com/special_offers/view/tignes---spring-short-breaks

Drive overnight easy done in 12hrs with a few drivers to share the load and rotating every couple of hours. Have driven several times and it is tiring. If you're long weekend starts on Wednesday night then you may get return fligths to Geneva quite cheaply, hire a car and book some accommodation. Less tiring and just as much time skiing Toofy Grin

Peter,

I'd recommend flying out on a Wednesday or Thrsday morning, hire a smallish car at Geneva to drive to resort - you should arrive at resort around lunchtime - then ski until Saturday or Sunday lunchtime and travel back to the airport - home for Saturday or Sunday !

The flight out on Wednesday (and possibly Thursday) should be cheap, the flight back on Saturday or Sunday will probably be more.

www.holidayautos.com have been good to me when hiring a car.

We've done a coulple of these now and you'll probably find it easier/less tiring to fly if you arent intending to stay very long (and you can spend more time on the snow!). Although we set the weekends quite a way in advance to get the cheapest flights then left the accom relatively late.

We flew jet2 to chambery and drove to valmorel stayed in the hotel du bourg - B&B basic but a nice place and would go back.
Also have done airlines various and stayed in chalet calluna in Les Carroz (amazing food and hospitality but not quite such a budget weekend!

Both of these involve a transfer journey of less than an hour and have plenty of runs to keep you occupied.

Transfers or car hire are very expensive for a few days skiing. The Mountainsun offer is a great one (no commercial interest, but we are satisfied past customers).

I've only ever done it using the first flights on Saturday mornings out to Geneva (i.e. Sat - Tues eve) - my record is being on the slopes of Les Carroz before 10am (hand luggage only, collected by a friend). Even if travelling with luggage and hiring a car, 11am is perfectly feasible for those that are organised. Saturdays have worked for me as it does not overlap two weekly Sat-Sat rental periods.

Well talking Scotland and trains, if anyone is thinking about a trip to Scotland from the deep south, National Express East Coast is doing tickets for £7.50 at the moment, at that price worth looking around for dates you can go and taking a chance on the weather. You could always find a nice guest house with log fire, good selection of malts and go on a distillery tour if the weather blows a raspberry!

Peter Griffin, are you still planning on driving out? let me know if you are and you have space for a small one (with only hand luggage) in the car - would be happy to share driving time (done it before) and petrol/toll costs!

thanks!

bar shaker, just come back from there, the flight arrived Friday 10.20, out of the airport by 11 and sliding soon after, boarded on Sat and return flight was Sunday 11 am, (Bristol), well worth it imho Very Happy - no heli-skiing though because I need to off-set some of my carbon foot print Shocked

I'm very interested in that as I live 25 mins from Stansted. Weekday flights are early and late and very cheap. Look at Friday 20th Feb, return flights for £60 incl taxes. You could get the first flight (arrives 9am) and leave on the last flight (departs 7pm) with the whole day costing less than £130, incl ski carriage and lift pass. Now that is a cheap day's fun. Throw in a cheap overnight stay and its the skiing bargain of the year.

If anyone fancies this you want Fort William for Nevis Range & Glencoe & Aviemore for Cairngorm. The other two are a bit of a longer drive.

While I'm not sure of local costs, Nevis Range & Cairngorm are about six miles from Fort William and Aviemore respectively so can probably be taxied each morning. Glencoe is 30 miles back down the A82 in the middle of nowhere so needs a car.
