Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Riksgransen/Bjorkliden/Ice Hotel - Anybody Been?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
In the search to ski somewhere new/different/novel, we're off to the above Swedish Arctic Circle destinations in March (skiing plus Ice Hotel stay) for a few days.

We're not expecting mega sized areas/hundreds of lifts/wild apres - though we are encouraged to read reports of decent off piste excursions. The plan is to be based in Kiruna and hire a car.

Has anybody been??

Yeah, but your question is a bit like, chamonix, zermatt, cortina, anybody been? What do you want to know?

Apols, but I thought the clue was in the above bit :oops:And what with this being a snowsports related website ....

So......what are these areas like and what can we expect?? (and I don't mean "Snow covered landscapes where people slide about with planks strapped to their feet.... Toofy Grin )

Do you mean the Ice Hotel at Jukkasjarvi? Fantastic place - did 1 night in the hotel and 2 in the apartments on the same complex. It's a lovely place and quite interesting. Thay also build a scaled down replica of the Globe Theatre which is pretty amazing. Warning: It is an expensive place to eat and drink in - though the Absolut Bar is an absolute must Madeye-Smiley

It can also get bloody cold. They provide an all in one which is large enough to go over ski wear. Very Michelin Man Laughing The hotel is a constant -5C IIRC, which is positively warm compared to the outside temp - was -28C, although it was early Feb when I went.

There's a great range of activities, but no skiing - well not on the package I went there on at any rate. Plenty of dog sledging, Nordic Skiing, reindeer sledging (including going out and lassoing them), trips to Sammi camps, skidoo trips, night trips out through forests to see the Northern Lights and probably other options I didn't explore.

I've not been to Riksgransen, but isn't that the place where at certain times skiing is available 24 hours a day?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

mountainaddict, I skied Riksgransen in June 4 years ago. Posted a report here http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?p=44115&highlight=kiruna#44115. We had a great time and I would recommend it. The time that you're planning to go there would be much more open and some really interesting terrain if you're prepared to hike or heli.
