Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ruka is a small resort with not a lot of ski-ing, you would be better going to either Yllas or Levi, levi being the livlier of the two resorts.

The slopes are walkable from anywhere in Levi where as Yllas you have to get a bus - Its the same with Ruka from what ive been told.

been to both Yllas and Levi - Levi being my fave.

Although we had a fantastic week in Lapland the first week of January 09, I would not recommend Ruka, or Inghams!

We stayed in a self catered cabin, and thank god we did because the prices in restaurants for food and drink were crazy - 11 euros for a small glass of wine, and 6 euros for less than a pint of beer and 66 euros for two mains and a bottle of house white! We were told this is because of the tax to stop people binge drinking.

The off licence closes at 6 (supermarkets only sell beer and cider) so you have to get it quick after finishing skiing, then be sure not to miss the bus which only runs every hour to the cabins.

From the sounds of it Levi is a better place to go, because at least you've got more going on - Ruka was dead pretty much after 7 or 8pm.

I'd also think twice about using Inghams. The have a sneaky policy of screwing a bit more money out of their guests which works like this: A) advertise trips, ski hire and ski passes in euros; B) tell guests at the Inghams welcome meeting that all their rates are cheaper than the official Piste Building's rates because Inghams have kept 2008 prices, and they can pay by card; C) process payments for said trips but charge the customer in pounds not euros at an over inflated exchange rate, when the customer's only other options are to pay in cash, which would involve leaving the family waiting around in the cold for another hour, because by the time the customer has trekked across the village centre to the cash point he will have missed the bus back to the cabins because they only run every hour and finally D) send a letter in reply to the customer's complaint that they use a "commercial exchange rate" and "we are advised by our representatives that this is explained to all guests at the time of the transaction". Well, Inghams, your reps would say that wouldn't they, because by then they have processed the transaction to help hit their targets for upselling a certain value of trips. The overall additional costs of three days ski passes for 2 adults and ski hire for 1 was over 50 quid more than if we'd just paid the few extra euros, on our card at Nationwide's rates (no fees!) at the Piste Building.

Finally also heard lots of people that were in larger parties than us (and were given two separate cabins) saying that the standard of cabins, for the same price, were vastly different. Ours was nice, but we paid and additional supplement for the "spare room" which was in fact a couple of old matresses chucked on the mezzanine level in the roof.
