I am off to boarding to VD next saturday and I am little concerned by the lack of powder action of late. It is only my second trip, having gone to Tignes last year. Would it be better to have a crack at skiing if the snow doesnt fall this week or is a big dump forecast next week that will allow me to safely board away? Or does it even matter?!

mickeys, most weather forecasts are predicting snow for the Alps for this week and next. Of course they could be horribly wrong but here's hoping that they will be right for once - esp. as I am off to Les Arcs on Sat and have a new board to try out!

mickeys, WE have a friend who skied for years, and then took up boarding, vowing never to clip his boots into a ski binding again, until 3 years ago when he went on his hols and the snow was poor. After a morning on his board, and a very sore rear, he went to the ski shop, hired a pair of skis, and now does whatever the conditions dictate. he enjoys the board on powder days when the snow is great, and enjoys the skis when it's not so perfect.

I agree with Helen B. I mostly board, but if the conditions are v.hard then I switch back to skis and have an altogether better day.
I also think that the snowboarder "attitude" problem could be helped if a few more skiers boarded and boarders skied from time to time. It's exactly the same issue between motorcyclists and car drivers...they need to understand a little more of how the others see it.

I'm another one who switched to the dark side. Skiied for 10 years of holidays then switched to boarding for last 3. Used to hate boarders with a passion as I didn't understand this crazy slaloming all over the piste - stay on your own bit of piste, dammit!
As soon as I took it up, I understood the deal with having to stay on an edge and all became clear. It also helped me, as a boarder, to understand the mindset of a timid skiier as I approached them to pass. (ie, think about how much room you need to give them then double it so they still miss you when they take unnecessary evasive action on hearing your board approaching...)
I must say, I have occasionally felt the pull of "having a go" on skis again... but so far haven't succumbed. I may have a pop on snowblades soon... they look fun!
