Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Very Sad news to hear. Jean Michel Delavay, of Delavay Sports Les Gets was sadly taken from us on Tuesday in an Avalanche. JM knew Les gets like no other, is a great skier and instructor and despite the dangerous conditions Tuesday, we feel that he would not have been acting recklessley nor neglegently. He was a a great chatacheter and rare in his adoration of the British. One of the funniest people i knew, razorsharp wit and had shown to me that life in France with the Frenchies wasn't always to be difficult and frustrating.

Thoughts with the family and his close friends. XX

Super wierd morning, i get this news, then by chance the pisteur that uncovered JM came by the shop. Seems his ski buddy was partially covered, dug himself out and climbed up the hill to get a better view of where JM may have been, unfortunatetly by doing so triggering a second slide leaving it near impossible to find a start point for a search, all by which time a good 20mins had past. A sad tale. Sad

very sad.
not wanting to be provoactive in any way but I genuinely dont understand why someone with so mcuh experience would ignore the warning to "not ski off piste" during a level 4 ? surely his training and experience should tell him he is playing "russian roulette" ?

backhojo, I believe JM had as much experience of the conditions and the mountains as anyone deciding the Avalanche risk. Avalanche risks are carefully calculated, however they are there to serve the lowest common denominator with regards to experience, JM did not fall into this category.

Lou, Shocked I am happier (if at all) i found out the way i did than reading it on the forum. XX

It is never good to loose people in the mountains but that is the nature of the beast I am sure someone with so much experience would have taken every precaution. RIP

I have just returned from Les Gets. I was taking private snowboarding lessons with Jean Marc who is a ESF instructor and also a very good friend of Jean Michel. Jean Marc was one of 10 who went to retrieve the body, and the actual person to find the body. They tried resus for 45 minutes. On thursday eve around 6pm the ESF instructors had an informal tribute for Jean Michele. They descended a black run on Mont Cherry with a flame torch in hand. They then went to the family home of JML for a few moments to pay their silent respects while the family remained on the balcony. It was the most beautiful tribute I have ever witnessed in my entire life. The funeral was on friday at the church in Les Gets, it was so full that it was over flowing. It rained the entire day.

This was my first visit to Les Gets but as sad as it was, it was so nice to see what a real genuine community is like. There was not a person in town that was not devastated buy the news. I will surly return and have more lessons with Jean Marc and eventually learn to snowboard! xx

leena_19, thank you for sharing your first hand experience and welcome to snowHeads.

SMALLZOOKEEPER, finding out about a friend's death that is public in this way, after the fact, can be quite disconcerting, shocking even (something similar happened to me a couple of weeks ago and I went into shock for over 24 hours and had to take time off work). You might not be having such a strong reaction as I did but at the very least I hope you have someone good to talk to and don't be surprised if you're a bit quiet for a few days. Tempting though it might be to stay alone, try to get out if you can.
