Poster: A snowHead
|
In a departure from snow reporting as we know it, the Daily Telegraph today reports ....
Quote: |
Poor snow fall and unseasonably high temperatures in popular resort of Whistler had left the snow pack looking emancipated and unstable. |
From thefreedictionary.com:
Quote: |
emancipate1. To free from bondage, oppression, or restraint; liberate. |
That Telegraph snow report in full:
Biggest snowfall in years delights skiers in Alpine resorts
Do you support the emancipation of the snowpack?

I'm still struggling to work out what the reporter meant to say when he said 'emancipated'.

scrubyjoe, I'm not sure that snow can be emaciated, any more than it can be emancipated. But you're right, that's what he probably had in mind.

Hurtle, I do agree. Its a term i have mainly heard used to describe malnourished children in Africa..... some could argue thats the metaphor he was going for. He missed his target either way and must suffer the comedic consequences which we rain down on him.

I thought "free from bondage" in your title meant it wasn't bonded to the lower layers - ie very high avalanche risk. Or is that actually what was meant? He did say it was unstable.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

snowball, you're probably correct, though it could be "free of oppression" - the oppressive and compressive effects of skiing and grooming.

the glacier terrian round there should be old enough to vote by now

You know it makes sense.

I'm not sure about that. Switzerland, for example, is one of the oldest democracies in the world (dating back to 1291). However, women only recently secured the vote in Swiss elections. And I very much doubt that Swiss glaciers (irrespective of gender) enjoy that level of emancipation.
