Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Junior vs adult ski boots?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
This is our second family ski trip and I am looking to buy ski boots for my kids. We all seem to have quite large feet in our family so my 11 year old daughter will probably need a size 6 ski boot although she is only 150cm tall and weighs about 4 1/2 stone. My son is 15 and takes a size 10 shoe and is 160 cm tall and probably only weighs about 8 stone.

I'm guessing that the 11 yr old will still need junior boots, skis and bindings but my son, with his feet, will only be in adult kit.
Please can someone let me know if I'm heading in the wrong direction.

I'd be very interested to know what the theory is about moving from juniors into adults - what age? weight? ability? As yet, it is all a mystery!
Thanks Puzzled

littlebear, welcome to snowHead

To use myself as an example I was the same height and weight as my dad when I was 13. When I was 11 I was the same height and weight as one of his friends. To be fair I was an early developer.

I think this is always going to be a bit of a grey area. People vary in size and weight regardless of age. Some kids grow faster than others.

Its what suits the individual, not what suits the tags

littlebear, I'm not a bootfitting expert, one will be along, but I have a 12 year daughter with size 5 feet. I don't think adult boots are adviseable at that age as they just aren't strong/heavy enough to flex them. Child's boots go up to quite a large size and they are also usually far cheaper. I got my daughter a a pair of top of the range tecnica boots, previous season, for about £60 and hopefully they will last her again this year unless she has another growing spurt. I did however get her ladies skis, she's pretty good and I felt they were more appropriate for her in 144 cm. I guess it's probably not possible to get child's boots for your son anyway, cant imagine they go to 10's.
