I am hoping to bring together six individuals for a holiday concentrating on off-piste skiing at SCGB silver/purple off-piste standard, with a mountain guide. Possible destinations are Andermatt, Klosters or St Anton, but if you want to join in there is time for you to influence the final choice and dates. We are aiming for week beginning 14/15 March 2009. There are three firm takers but we really need six to share the cost of the guide. So we are looking for three more individuals (any age/sex) to make a viable group . Jehu, it might prove productive to post a translation of "SCGB silver/purple off-piste standard".
While there are indeed many members of the SCGB that visit snowHeads, there is an increasing proportion who have little idea what it is.

SCGB Silver Off-Piste = "You have experience in off-piste conditions and can ski at least 10 to 15 continuous turns in deep powder snow, but tend to fall over or stop because you gain too much speed. You are confident to safely negotiate all types of snow off piste including breakable crust and wind slab without holding up the group. On steep off-piste, you are still unconfident in controlling speed and direction. Your style is still somewhat lacking, and you need some more practice and perhaps tuition but you are keen to challenge yourself further."
SCGB Purple Off-Piste = "You feel very confident when skiing off-piste, and are ready to tackle steeper slopes and ski faster. Alternatively, you may have many years' experience off-piste, be an extremely competent skier, good in powder, but less good in difficult snow and therefore not ready to progress to Expert category. Technically good, you ski fast, you are fit and love to ski off-piste whenever possible."

If someone is "confident in breakable crust" "without holding up the group", I would have though he shouldn't "fall over or stop because you gain too much speed"?
Or is it all about speed? At the expense of frequent falling?
Sorry to distract from the thread. But am most curious at the wording of the "standard".

I am very interested in going. My only constraint is that it must be after March 12th.
In terms of destinations, I was planning on taking a trip to st. anton this year, as it was recommended by a friend, but I'm keen on going anywhere that has better terrain - and i'm always in search of the best pow.
Let me know more information so I can book my flights soon.

marlin_102, Thanks. I have e-mailed you. We still need two more to make hiring a guide affordable. Probable date: week beginning 14th March. I don't think we would describe ourselves as "very advanced" but we can ski off-piste all day in most conditions and terrain without falling and we are keen to improve technique and speed and enjoy a bit of a challenge.

marlin_102, St Anton has brilliant terrain but it really has had an avg snow fall so far.
Jehu, I'm also really only interested if the guide is UAIGM rather than a ski school or SCGB guide. Not meaning to be arsey but I have so much greater confidence off piste with the UAIGM guides. Are you interested in off piste or day tours as klosters is a real haven for day tours with loads of stuff to do and Gotschnasport (ski store) in Klosters as rental on all touring equipment, ABS back packs and loads of fattie skis.

Jehu, has your group considered MonteRosa, italy (alagana/gressoney) Best snow in last 30 yrs huge circuit. Cheap accomodation. Cheap flights to Milan. One accomodation possibility is at 2800m on side of mountain. Heli ski is possible also and not too expensive. Also huge 30k round trip into zermatt and back again.

More like 65kms, I'd think..from la Trinte to La Trinte, I recall.
Personally, it is too much travel in a mad rush...if I was to do the heli again, I'd pick a different route.
Agree that MR is defo wortha another visit and if you have a VG snow year, then look-out..

JT, whats a VG snow year, if it is Very Good then does a 4m top mountain layer in first week of Feb equal that. Monte Rose rocks this year!!!

Jehu, Have you considered Slovenia? We have good contacts with local UIAGM Slovenian Mountain Guides and they are raving about conditions there this winter. Really great guides, very professional, speak very good English, can arrange everything from the moment you arrive in the country. Let me know if you'd like further details.

Chris, I was in a taxi earlier in the week and the driver was raving about Kranjska Gora as a family destination, if it has good off piste, even better!
Could I suggest that you post some info about Solvenia in the resorts section?

chrismountaintracks, Slovenia was not on our radar at all. Will pm you for more info, thanks. Yes we were thinking of UAIGM guides. We weren't thinking of touring but don't mind some walking uphill (max 45mins, speaking personally)
