Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Avalanche hits chairlift and sweeps teenager to death [updated thread]

This thread updated, following an investigation into the avalanche reported below in January 2005. Scroll to 8 December postings.
---------------------------------------------------
A 13-year-old boy was swept to his death from a chairlift at Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort by a 'wall of snow', reported by a witness as "10 to 20 feet high". A 7-hour search of the scene eventually led to the discovery of the body of Allen Brett Hutchison.
Extreme weather conditions have affected this area of the USA over the past fortnight, causing snowfalls of several metres, and rescuers battled against low temperatures as night fell...

This report from Review-Journal, Las Vegas.

[Thanks to snowHead Dave J for reporting this news]

 Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

How staggering that he was actually swept off the chairlift. I can't see from the photo, but one can only assume that the lift had no safety bar, which may well have saved the poor guy's life.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Mark, you are correct - it didn't. Check the second link in DG's post for more on this. David - it's a little confusing having 2 possible places to post on the same topic. Any reason why it's not a normal single thread news item ?

My fault. Posted the link to David, but in view of the earlier thread re massive snow fall in Sierra Nevadas also posted a link there. Sorry for the confusion..

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Dave J, OK thanks. Can I suggest any future posts on this topic go into the other thread which has more in it. Cheers. (Threads can be split by Mods but not merged)

A postscript to this very sad accident, which may be unique in the history of skiing:

The Las Vegas Sun reports that the ski area concerned - Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort - has been faulted by a US Forest Service investigation for its avalanche protection and rescue training. Click here for story.

The background to this avalanche was the massive snowcover in the Sierra Nevada mountains near Las Vegas in the early part of the 2004/5 winter, which resulted from snowfall that was the heaviest since 1916. This snowHeads thread has more.
