Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Getting Snowed Out

How much snow would it take to get snowed in/out of Tignes? Is this likely, or does it happen often?

Val D'isere was closed on Monday 15th..apparently close to 80cm fell in one dump and a bit of slide closed the access road into the village.

No idea about tignes unfortunately

I think the road up closed due to an avalanche around the 16/17th Dec this month and I would have thought a storm for 2 days would get close to doing that. Maybe they were looking at upto a metre..........

You'll get snowed out if you can't make the hill up when it is snowing and you'll need chains or winter tyes.. Arrive late at night and they might not have a chance to clear the road and you be waiting down in the valley. That is my best guestimate.

Otherwise, mountain roads get cleared pretty quickly and they are geared up for it.

There was a bad Saturday a few years ago when a big landslide closed the road up from BSM and nothing could get up. All the folk driving, or arriving on the train, had to doss down somewhere - they opened sports halls etc as emergency dormitories. I would imagine that landslips would close that road at least as often as actual snowfall (and are less easily ploughed to the side) though there was also an awful lot of snow around that night.

Well fingers crossed for plenty of snow at the end of our holiday along with infastructure strikes (good on the French and their striking!) - another few days frolicking in the white stuff would be lovely!
