I haven't read all this so might have missed something but I worked for years in an A&E department and, in our health trust, the best way for a speedy referral for the returning casualty is to present at A&E where they would get seen and issued with an appointment for the NEXT fracture clinic i.e the next working day. Obviously if you're worried by anything in the meantime that would still be an option or via your GP, but I do agree with you Helen that there needs to be a better system, especially with the more serious injuries.
A friend of mine had what would appear to be a very similar injury last season, with no neurological damage fortunately........he can't wait to get back on his skis this season.
Fingers crossed for a full and speedy recovery.

skimum, I was told by the neurosurgery sister at Newcastle that it probably wouldn't have speeded anything up in this case, as our local fracture clinic would have needed to refer him on to the neurosurgeons anyway. Only thing that may have helped would be to have gone to A&E at the hospital where the consultant is based, which is 15 miles away. If he had been transferred to hospital I assume the French hospital or insurers would have done it. I am not sure JulesB would have relished the prospect of our local A&E department on an icy Tuesday morning, to be honest I don't think he was well enough, even the GP insisted on coming out on a home visit.

No idea if I did the right thing, but when I smashed up my femur we got the insurance company to take me to Leeds A&E and after lying on a bed in a corridor for a fair bit I was eventually put on a ward and saw the specialist the next day (which was important as I needed referring to BUPA....)
So in my case going direct to A&E worked....

I think there should be more continuity in EU health care. When we have asked things like, what do I do now and who do I need to see? the only people able to answer these questions are Snowheads!
I am tempted to start the Beaumont alternative therapy to spinal recuperation, and embark on a European wine tour with Argenterre (as long as it doesn't turn into a bucket list)

Scary but true.... The internet as a whole looks to have become a "second" or even "first" opinion on almost everything.
It probably won't be long before some doctor is in the news for treating a patient based on doing research on the internet to treat a problem and said patient dies and during the investigation it is found the doctor received the advice from facebook or something.

daehwons, it's a double-edged sword. The internet contains almost everything anyone might need to know, but the useful stuff is buried in piles of dross. The ability to sort the wheat from the chaff is a critical skill - for which I think there's no substitute for a formal education. I know that Mrs L (a GP) looks up lots on the internet - some stuff on restricted access sites and some not. Also, she is frequently presented with printed wads that patients have downloaded at random.

You can find all sorts to back up any theory you want on t'internet. The thing that most people overlook is that diagnostics and prescription are only one tiny part of what a doctor does, and there really isn't any substitute for formal training and experience.

Am in that dangerous category of not being medically trained but involved in healthcare education, so get to read all the scary gory stuff, and as you will know doubt be familiar with, start thinking you've got the disease you're teaching about...[but not when I teach about prostate cancer ]

I don't think t'internet will ever replace medical professionals but I personally feel quite reassured when they'll check their thoughts against an appropriate site or direct me to appropriate sources for further reading rather than the old skool doc approach which seemed to be "I am infallible". NHS does have some system problems - still waiting a call back from a number of messages left with an anti-coagulant clinic nurse over 4 months ago..hmm

I am sure everything will be fine, and I will pass on your best wishes to julesb . It will be difficult for him to restrain himself from doing things too soon, but I think on this occasion he might have to do as he is told. Long walks with the dog , and physiotherapy are probably going to be as strenuous as it gets for a little while at least.

Helen make sure he follows the recovery plan to the letter. I detatched a shoulder tendon a couple of years ago and had to have my arm strapped to my body for three months. The temptation to move it was unbearable but, doing what I was told, meant recovery in 9 months rather than 3 years.

Just been to neoro-surgery at Newcastle. Lovely consultant;yet more x-rays; wouldn't let me keep them to post on facebook; can take collar off; if voice not back to normal in 3 months, teflon injections in throat to make non-slip. Oh how we giggled!
Need re-hab physio. Decide to go private to speed things up and get more intensive treament. Got appointment this Thur. On the slopes again next Thur?
Can drive new car when I feel up to it! This is scheduled for tomorrow when Mrs B is back to work and will not find out (Ssshhh! don't anyone tell her
 )

If possible get to physio with sportsinjury practice, they usually understand the feeling of getting back into sport better.
