Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Klosters holiday tips

Worn out searching, without success, so would welcome top tips to get something affordable. Prefer a chalet but seem few, or reasonable hotel package. Travelling from Edinburgh (10 January via anywhere !). Nothing really available with the major operators. Any smaller companies do something reasonable rather than luxury ? Would trying Davos make things much easier? Too many questions I know - conditions should be good, well fingers crossed !

paulmags, it does depend on what you think of as affordable Puzzled It means different things to different people but I wouldn't think of either Klosters or Davos as resorts that offer much less than high quality/high cost. If you can give an idea of what you're looking for from the property and resort, if you would consider resorts OTHER than above, and an idea of your budget, we can probably help Very Happy

oops, thanks for that - I should have been clearer. Ideally around £600/700 each (half board and with WC and shower or bath) but to include flights from Edinburgh which can be done for about £170. It's really the Davos/Klosters area we're looking to ski since we've done most other major and advanced areas with 'wife's preference being the more pretty Klosters. Inghams seem do 4star for £718 but from Gatwick. We can train from Zurich. Maybe asking the impossible - thoughts very welcome.

Phew, after much searching, and some superb help from 'Anniepen' we're now destined for Klosters. All we need now is Lidl to do a fur and diamond special and we'll be set !

Paul,

Klosters on the surface seems expesnve but there are some very nice chalet apartments for reasonable money. When you are there, the resort is very well designed for all abilities but specialises in day touring. If you have skinned before or are a good skier and would liek to try a day tour speak to the guys at Gotschnasport and they will give you advice on a guide and sort you with all the necessary equipment.

Enjoy the resorts, I have been 3 times and absolutely love it.

Klosters is a brilliant resort during the day. Attractive, atmospheric and huge untouched powderfields.

But it sucks at night. Quite possibly the quietest resort in Switzerland.

I shall be in Davos Dorf January. The cost of staying for 5 night is 75 Euro per room per night (for two persons B&B) . That is the cheapest as I have to pay 110, 113 and 115 Euro staying in Engelberg, Films/Laax and St Moritz respectively. These are accommodations at skiing resorts. Even staying en route a normal city hotel in the Duisburg, for the return journey to Amsterdam, I have to pay 84 Euro for the room with breakfast included for two.

I think Kloster was a bit cheaper as it is more far away from the skiing circuit. The low 75 Euro per room per night was in a private B&B (Privatzimmer or Pension). Switzerland is usually more expensive than the rest of the Alps.
Last year I skied Austrian's Mayrhofen and Ischgl and the B&B room rates were 44 and 45 Euro respectively. The year before staying in Sion to ski Verbier was 121 Euro for 2 per night B&B. Zermatt was skied by staying at the Italian side at 75 Euro B&B for 2 per night. Milky way (France with Italy) was cheapest at 59 Euro B&B for 2 per night at a Mercurer hotel in Briancon. We always eat at restaurant in the evening and seldom do 7 nights unless the area is big enough.

paulmags, you will LOVE it - as others have said a brilliant and underated ski area as the piste map doesn't do it justice and they (wisely) haven't plastered every slope with 3 or 4 'runs' just to get the quoted xxx kms of piste figure up.

Only downside is getting up on the mountain, dodgy two-stage 1930's cable car from Klosters, Thomas the Tank engine choo-choo from Davos.

saikee, thanks for that mini-survey of B&B prices! Very Happy whatever happened with your sister in law? Toofy Grin

red 27,

She got a divorce, walked away with a property, a big lump sum and close to £50,000 annual maintenance.
