I know Spyder is not the best loved brand on here but I've only ever had decent kit from them in the past (all genuine cos most of it came direct from the importers) and still ski in my team issue vest, even though it's got 2001 embroidered in there somewhere Anyway, I was doing the old last minute Christmas shopping thing yesterday getting dragged round John Lewis on Oxford Street by SWMBO and I saw their sports section had a smattering of Spyder kit. Lo and behold, one of the soft shell jackets (Top Shelf Soft Shell) was really nice and exactly what I have been looking for for ages to replace my knackered TNF windbloc fleece. Does anyone have experience with Spyder's soft shells or can anyone tell me I'm being stupid and there's a proper brand (Arc'teryx, Eider etc) jacket available that's 1/2 the price (this one was £160!) and won't make me look like a flash git?

Sideshow_Bob, it's not as though the £160 could be spent on something useful like skiing is it?
Have you heard of TK Maxx?

Sideshow_Bob, if it's 'exactly what you're looking for' and ' to replace your knackered existing whateveritis', why haven't you already bought it? You care that much what a bunch of brand-obsessed kit nerds think?

£160 seems a bit pricey mate. Got mine from the States, previous season's for £70 and it looks the dogs danglies. Only thing I'd say is that they're not as warm as a good fleece, if you want something warm then TNF Denali Jacket is quite good.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Is this a fleece or a softshell? I thought there was a difference...£160 for a softshell is not necessarily a lot (though I prefer other brands and anyway I do my best not to pay retail).

Yeah, I did check for prices state-side but there's only one place doing them at a discount on the $260 list price and they only have limited stock. Ebay (presuming they're not fake) only has them at £280 from some store in Germany (damn this exchange rate). It is a soft-shell but not a fully waterproof one.
Lizzard, Angelina Jolie is 'exactly what I'm looking for' and perfect 'to replace your knackered existing whateveritis' but just like the jacket she's only available at a price rather higher than I'd like to pay. I could take James the Last's advice and hit TK Maxx but I'm worried they'll only have Liza Minelli in stock and she's so last year's model

After leaving my web browser open I'd like to point out to the world that I was not comparing SWMBO unfavourably to any film actresses or singers nor was I describing her as a 'knackered existing whateveritis' and I humbly and sincerely apologise. Still, looks like I'm not getting the jacket after all now

Timmaah, it fits well, looks good and I'd use it for skiing in and also for hiking and generally wearing about when it's not completely urinating down. I did hope to find out if anyone had one and what they thought of it (which bucking bronco did) and if anyone could offer any alternatives (eg 'look at this Marmott jacket, it's £60 cheaper and is made from gore xxl fabric which is more waterproof/breathable).

I thought that by having a soft shell jacket it would be more 'flexible' - no so...
after trying on every jacket there has been over past few years, I found soft shell to be heavier and not so warm, but also quite strangling around the neck area - like when done up it presses on the adams apple (i am female too).
the best jackets for comfort are
Kjus
degre 7
Schoffel
some other brands like Arcterex and north face are quite crinkly and burton and other snowboarding gear is quite stiff, but some manufacturers make jackets and make trousers but not a matching set - whysat then!
I personally think Spider gear is old fashioned and samey boring material and designs every year.
also when in Alpe D'huez last week, they had a wide range of stuff which we can't get in UK and I thought the gear was more trendy and fashionable, like the materials and patterns were more inventive than the usually black and white, orange and grey, red and white - snore zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
