Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ciao Kitenski,

Good luck getting there!!! My dads been there since Sunday - can't ski because of the amount of snow that fallen. He's lost count of the amount of serious avalanches that have happened. The road to and from Gressoney is seriously blocked with tonnes of snow. He should have flown home from Turin last night - but the villages in that area are all completely cut off. He should be back now getting ready to fly to Austria with us on Saturday but they don't think they'll be able to get out of the resort until after the weekend. To make matters worse the hotel he's in has run out of beer!!!

Hi,

He's just phoned to say that a convoy has been organised to get them out of the resort - it sounds to me like those that need to leave are all going to follow a piste-basher down to Aosta? Some of those he is travelling with have arranged flights for tomorrow evening but my dad and his '2 week old' smelly ski gear!! are getting on various trains and hope to meet us in Austria late Saturday or early Sunday - [soo pleased I won't be sharing a room with him!!]

Thanks for the offer of beer - maybe next time? Little Angel

xx

skiwithmax, We have flights booked to Turin in the first week of March. Tell me why my group of 12 should come to Gressoney... How big is the ski area (no cheating... more than 10 to 15 minutes on a ski bus doesn't count!).

We haven't sorted out any resort yet... Were thinking of Cervinia but it's expensive to get in there...

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

I skied Gressoney a few years back and was really taken with it. Intriguing terrain, unspoilt valley, lovely runs. I only saw a third of the linked Monte Rosa ski area - it was January and winds/weather had shut connections - but loved it. If you want lots of cruisy stuff, avoid it. Stay in Gressoney Trinite to avoid the ski bus, and you'll be steps away from the chairlift, but bear in mind that it's a very small resort - just a few hotels and shops etc. Gressoney St Jean, down the valley, is bigger.

Champoluc might be worth a look, for a mixed group, since you can ski from there to the other parts of the Monte Rosa.

If your group is really mixed, you're probably better off in the Milky Way ski area (Sauze, Sestriere etc.) - also very accessible from Turin.

 You know it makes sense.

David Goldsmith, yeah, I know... it's a case of finding accommodation. My lot prefer self catering and not much short of being threatened at gunpoint will make them go into hotels. You try and find a single (or even 2!) chalet(s)/apartments/houses that'll cater for 1 married couple, 6 single blokes and 4 single women. Bear in mind that there are, of course, several combinations of "I'm not sharing a room with him/her" etc... and it's a recipe for fun and frolics all the way, let me tell you...

On the dolomites side, the apartments and flats are all spacious (150 sq. m for 6-8 people) and yet on the French/Italian end, it's back to Sardines again. I kid you not, I saw a flat advertised for 10 people, it was 45 sq. m! Now that's impressive even by French standards... (Risoul if I recall correctly...)

If anyone is aware of some hidden fount of knowledge of reasonably priced houses/flats/apartments, feel free to share the knowledge! I'm tempted now to play brinkmanship with them. There are several more highly-priced houses and apartments around and I reckon that with the Euro going the way it is, there won't be much pressure on those apartments (certainly from the Brits). I might therefore take my chances and leave it until a week or so before we go and try and negotiate some of the owners into a common sense price.

Fall back position is we end up in three 4-person shoeboxes or b&b somewhere. Might be worth a gamble....

Re:Gressoney

Don't think the piste work is worth going there for... everyone goes for the off-piste and guiding/heli-trips, IMV..which is another whole new ball-game.. wink

The weather system is fed from the south, AIUI so it will not neccesarily reflect ther weather and conditions of resorts close-by.

If you can hit the place after a storm then you have lucked out big-time..otherwise I wouldn't rush back...been there 5 times now.

Quiet as a church mouse with slippers on in the evenings....as even the Scandis save their energy for the next day

carled,
Hi there and thanks for your reply.
For your group is not a problem for me to organise your trip... but if I write the package ont his forum maybe it will be removed for terms and conditions policy... send me an email to max@skiwithmax.com and I will be very happy to help you.

Regarding Gressoney.. well it is a very nice typical 'Austrian' orientated resort. GREAT SKIING for all abilities and not too expensive.

March is a great time to enjoy Gressoney, Champoluc and Alagna. Good weather and not too many people.. but the Gressoney area is also known for the uncrowded ski runs... because the lifts are fast and very modern.

Send me a few lines and I will be in touch with you.

Ciao
