I'm looking at going to Jackson Hole in February.
I'd be interested in any info on best place to stay for access to skiing but also access to apres ski! A few beers will be required to relive the drop into Corbet's Couloir...
Looks like Teton Village is best for access to mountain, but town of Jackson might have more going on - it's 12 miles away from Teton skiing. Is that true, is there easy access to connecting lifts from Jackson, and which is better for accomodation? Going
Going on annual trip with a friend who lives in US, have gone to Vail a few times in the past, wondered how JH compared, if anyone has been to both?
Thanks

It's a free bus ride from Jackon to Jackson Hole ski area. There are a few bars in Teton Village, but I go skiing to ski, so when I went there I stayed at Teton, easy access in the morning means more time in bed....

I'll be there end of Jan and early February (my first time too). I was advised to stay at Teton Village because you have to get up really early in Jackson Village if you want to catch the bus and ski reasonably early. However there are no cheap places to stay in Teton - your best bet if you can get a group together is a condo.

JH is tons harder than Vail. That's your warning lol.

JH is really really tough as I found last year when I went for 3 weeks but it cant have been that bad because I am heading back in 5 weeks time. I havent been to vail so cant compare it for you sorry.
The bus journey only takes about 20 mins IIRC and I think it was enough time for me to gain consciousness and have a hot drink and I will be staying in the town again this year - its nice to have the shops and cinema and stuff for the evenings.
There was a couple of times last year when I got stuck up at Teton and couldnt get back to Jackson because it had snowed so much but it was literally just an hour or two whilst they blasted the road.

Doing the Steep and Deep Camp (plus 5 other days) as I said on another thread. I'm assuming it will be something like Whistler's Extremely Canadian which i enjoyed a lot. I was a bit disapointed, though, that the off-piste in-bounds skied out so quickly. This time we hope to do at least a day back-country, if not two.

I'd be interested in how you find the steep and deep camp as I've been looking out for something equivalent for a while. Maybe the topic for another thread, but does anyone know of any similar camps in good ole Yurp?

Helen LS, yes, Feb 4 - 7 (our last 4 days). We are a group of 6.
I gather we will be in groups of 4 or 3 per instructor/guide on the Steep and deep.

footsoldier, I'll be there in 3 days time... for the 8th time. So I guess I like it.
I like Vail, but JH is a different beast, less managed and more variable terrain and snow.
We always stay in town - because with a family it is more fun, and there is way more dining choice. We hire a SUV at the airport and that allows us to get out to the hill when we want. Otherwise it is a shuttle bus - which takes quite a time now the town has grown.
Teton village has doubled in size and options in the last few years. If I was going to stay in Teton Village I would stay at the Alpenhof - which has way more character than the other rather corporate options. The new Terra looks interesting though.
You can get discounts on lift passes from Ski Independence
I am planning to do the steep and deep in 2010 on a non-family trip.
Have fun.

The S & D Camp gets you the cheapest lift pass for your days with them, but many accommodation providers will get you quite cheap passes too (along with your accommodation).

Thanks all. We'll have an SUV, so can move about, just deciding on where is better base. Going for 4 days skiing (not S+D camp), and we're both looking for tough/backcountry skiing. Corbet's will certainly be jumped into, after that, who knows...
Skiing is absolutely the reason for going, but will have a blow out one or maybe two nights, cos it's a holiday! Last year rented a 2 bed self catering condo at Vail, which worked well, so looking at same again.
Looking for backcountry, bumps, bowls, tree skiing...and bars...not so bothered about cinemas, restaurants etc, so maybe Teton will keep us happy and closest to slopes with a trip to Jackson one night?
looking like JH, but Steamboat was also suggested..as was return to Vail, but been there 6 times, and might never go anywhere else if I don't do it now! Any other suggestions welcome, but has to be drivable from Salt Lake. (250 miles to JH)
Might have a look at S+D camp, could do the dates - what is standard, is it more about learning to do it, or is it more like guiding to best areas with people who are already comfortable?
Cheers

If it is like Extremely Canadian I'd say it is more guiding, but we were in the top group and probably it would depend what you wanted to some extent. They start with a "ski-off" when they watch you ski a short slope and put you in groups of same standard (though if you were with friends you could make your own group). I am told by one of our group who did it before that there is lots of socialising with other Camp people in the evenings. (Um, could have put that last bit better.)

footsoldier, plenty of condos in teton village - quite expensive in the peak parts of the season.
I like Steamboat - but JH is way better for what you want to do.
You also should try and get out of the backcounty gates so take all your avvy gear and see if you can hook up with a local/guide etc. The SCGB reps used to go out Back country but are not allowed to now. Might be worth trying to hook up with someone via TGR? Grand Targhee (an hour and a bit over the Idaho border) is well worth a visit if there is good powder.

I'd recommend staying in the town (as opposed to Teton Village) for choice of restaurants and bars.
The bus service to the skiing was very good - free and regular (that's UK regular as opposed to US regular...). And the 12 mile journey only took about 20 - 25 minutes.
There was good apres (quiet by Austrian standards) at the Mangy Moose at the foot of the slopes, although that was 4 years ago. Not sure what it's like now though.
We stayed at the Wolf Moon Inn motel in downtown Jackson. It was a clean, comfortable and very cheap hotel 5 minutes walk from restaurants and opposite a ski bus stop. If/when we go back we would definitely stay there again.
Winter is off peak in Jackson so the hotels reduce their prices. It's close to Yellowstone national Park so prices take a hike in the summer.
We could have done the snowmobile trip to the park to see Old Faithful but (for some reason) didn't. Now wish we had though....
We love to ski steep stuff and had a great time there. However, we peered into Corbet's and it looked suicidal....

John Crawford, I did the snow mobile trip to Yellowstone last year to see Old Faithfull and it truly was amazing I still look back in awe at some of the photos I took and think OMG I have been there how lucky am I !
Not sure whether I will do another yellowstone trip this year or find something else to do on a day off instead!
Am really starting to get excited about it now - there was a guy in my group last year who had been 16 times before and his dad was in a different group and he was 80 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can I start packing yet ?

I did the whole dog sledding thing a few years back in Lapland and they even had husky puppies for us to cuddle before they got too smelly !

Snow King hotel is quite good (or at least it was when I was last there) and it's got it's own mini resort which does night skiing

They are similar. But within both Extremely Canadian and Steep&Deep there are different level groups who do very different skiing. But at the end of S&D everyone gets a chance to jump into Corbets.
I hope your 5 days are before the S&D camp, as arriving and diving straight into S&D wouldn't be the best option.

Why drive all over the continent when you can ski at Alta/Snowbird???
For epic side-country tours, you can ski from one resort to the next. There's an outfit that does that, 5 Canyon Tour or something like that.

abc, The main reason for travelling is my friend lives next to Salt Lake, and skis Snowbird/Alta all the time, so wants a change. I've been there as well, when based in Park City. I'd agree with you that they're great places to go for skiing, though I'd have to say I didn't think too much of Park City as a town. I remember the snow at Alta as being immense.
Anyway, all booked up today, 2 bed condo in Teton near the lifts, and we'll drive to Jackson some night if we feel like it. Thanks for all the help, can't wait...

I am going with my girlfriend in Feb- going to propose! Can you suggest any non-ski things to do? This thread is great! Any idea of the prices for some of these excellent trips out? We are going for 10 days- not sure if we will be skiing all the time- jet lag and all that!

For anyone thinking of visiting Yellowstone Park in Winter (my favourite season for visiting - I've been twice!) the best website for info is the National Park Service here.
Helen LS there are some superb X-Country ski trails in the Park suitable for beginners eg around the geysers and hot springs at Old Faithful, but to do these you really need to stay in the Park for say a 2 night stay, the Park Concessioners Xanterra do package deals eg the Nordic Heaven at Old Faithful Snow Lodge deal. The snowcoach transportation into the Park is a great experience in itself, the driver pulls in at places of interest to talk about the area and wildlife - watch out for the otters (on the frozen lake they dive through the holes in the ice caused by the warm water to go fishing), coyotes, elk, bison. Not yet seen any wolves (re-introduced to the park about 10 years ago) - they tend to stay away from humans!
