helena57, Sainte Foy is it.. the piste is pretty limited but the off piste is pretty extensive. Will go for a day to Tignes or something, not sure yet. Staying in stevomcds place which looks pretty nice so I am sure I'll get by! (As for the parcel I have been in bed the last couple of days not feeling great but will try and get to the post office this afternoon if not tomorrow morning, sorry for the delay).

helena57, With the off-piste, there is plenty - and a 10 minute drive over to Villaroger gives access to Les Arcs....

Even the off piste is not that extensive (perhaps a tenth of Val d'Isere / Tignes) so I reckon you will want to spend several days at other places. Not just Val d'Isere and Tignes but also Les Arcs and La Plagne (the latter has rather flat pistes but good off-piste) both of which are close by. Possibly Les Arcs may be the closest other resort (you can see the back of the Aiguille Rouge from St Foy, I think).
Of course, as usual in Europe you really need to hire a guide for off piste - most is far from the pistes and the best is steep (if you like that sort of thing) and anyway I don't know if you reckon you are an expert at gauging avalanche danger. I ski mostly off piste and I'm not. I got avalanched off piste at Sainte Foy on a totally innocuous day on a slope that was not steep when snow seemed fully consolidated.

Fair enough you might be experienced but "seemed" fully consolidated.. did you dig a pit or at least check the Avvy report? Maybe it is just my misunderstanding..

The avalanche danger level was low (2, I think) but I think the one who set it off onto us hit a bit of old wind plaque. The slope was about 30º at the top where it went- running out to flatter very gradually.
Even if you reckon you are an expert, though, and have a 1:25,000 map and a book of the best off piste routes .... would you do it? Without those things you just wouldn't know where to go to find most of them. (I'm talking about the bigger resorts here)
St Foy is basically only one valley, but even there the longest descents involve traversing and skinning around the back to a point at the top of the valley (as we were doing that day). The main off piste involves a shortish walk to the top - turning left from the top lift - then skiing over the top straight on. You may need a taxi to get back to the resort.
Actually, on second thoughts there may be routes down to the Val d'Isere road on the back but it is a south facing slope and I don't know about them.

was in Ste Foy in March last year - had a wonderful time. Plenty of accessible offpiste to play in, plus access to serious stuff that I'm sure you're aware of.
Are you staying in the 'station', or the village? Couple of good restaurants in the village - ask around in the hotel bar for local guides, the people there are very friendly and helpful.
and the bus stop to take you to the station - worth learning a few words of french for the 'friendly' bus driver (or, don't carry a snowboard.....)
When it does snow, the lifts can be shut for a while, they take their avo blasting quite seriously.
Make sure you make it over to the 'left' side of the piste map and the 'new' 6 man chair at the start of your week, ideally on a clear day - will give you a feel for the size/scope of the skiable area.
