Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The world's best ski cities

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
It's obviously a matter of debate, but these are the "world's five best big city ski destinations" compiled for MSNBC by 'skisnowboard.com', 'skisnowboardeurope.com' and 'xcskiresorts.com':

Salt Lake City
Reno
Quebec City
Innsbruck
Geneva

Here's the report.

I would have thought that Turin, which is hosting the 2006 Winter Olympics, beats Quebec hands down. Any other views?

Anyone been to Reno?

David Goldsmith, Boulder needs to be on this list!

Then, again, maybe not. Everyone should stay away...! Wink

"Best" and "big city" shouldn't be in the same sentence!

With Tignes, Val, La Rosière and the San Bernardo link with La Thuile in Italy, Sainte Foy, La Plagne, Valmorel, the 3 Valleys and Les Arcs - over 1,000 miles of groomed runs and the largest linked areas in the world - all between 8 minutes by funicular and 38 minutes by car, where else is there that can even come close? wink

Bourg Saint Maurice is obviously the only place to be!...

Apparently it has "city" aspirations too Confused - Rumours of planning permission being requested for a casino complex abound.... Sad

I don't really see Bourg as a destination in itself, rather as a convenient base for a skiing holiday. If I wasn't into skiing I suspect that I would get bored of it quite quickly on a holiday.

I think that one of the great skiing cities that has been missed out, and definitely deserves to be there more than Quebec, is Vancouver.

Well, if you're not into skiing, you might as well go to Amsterdam wink. On the other hand, if you're into a multitude of summer and winter activities and sports, you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere better. And isn't one of the main reasons for going to the mountains to get away from city stress and pollution? You could offer me ten times my income and I wouldn't even be tempted to head back to city 'life' Cool

Not so sure about Geneva really, it's a good location but not that handy for Swiss skiing. For a Swiss city I'd have nominated somewhere like Bern or Interlaken, you can go skiing using public transport, as you can in Fribourg and Neuchatel for that matter.

i'd have to second Kramer with Vancouver - slopes in the city (cypress mountain), the best ski resort in North America only 1.5 hours away (Whistler) and the option in April/May to ski in the morning and surf in the Pacific in the afternoon ....

PG, ...............but Bourg stinks (IMHO everytime i've stopped there) due to the pollution being trapped there??? Does the smell ever go away or is it "trapped" by the temperature inversions???

 You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
Dan, depends if you're cleverly located on the south-facing slopes, 60/70m above the valley floor or not wink There's no industry to speak of, so only when there's a high traffic throughput is there ever a problem. Most of the time it's fine.

What was the criteria? Does anyone actually stay in Geneva and travel to the slopes? the same would go for Turin.

coldworld, very good question. Geneva and Turin are 60-90 minutes from very good skiing, but you wouldn't want to travel that distance after a hard day's work on the hill.
I once based myself in Salt Lake City to ski, which is OK.

David Goldsmith, by those criteria Munich has to qualify easily! We are 40 minutes from the nearest useable slopes in Lenggries, an hour from Garmisch, and about 75 minutes from Kitzbuehel (if you manage to avoid the traffic). Zillertal about 90 - 120 minutes. St. Anton is about 2 1/4 hours (again if you manage to avoid the traffic over the Fernpass). Soelden, Obergurgl, Saalbach, Serfauss etc etc all within a two to three hours drive! Italy, just a couple of hours... and St. Moritz is about the furthest I venture at four hours. That must put us in at least the same league as Geneva?
