Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Mobile data charges - Switzerland - anyone found a local deal?

 Poster: A snowHead

Hi all,

I guess many of us have this problem - massive data charges from the mobile phone while abroad - £7 per Mb in my case. The solution is meant to be getting a prepay SIM card from a local provider, but try as I might I can't find anything decent in Switzerland. I'm basically looking for something that give me a load of data - don't care about txts & calls. If it comes with one of those USB modems so much the better.

Has anyone found any decent deals?

telford_mike, no but let me know if you do... Wink

The telecoms revolution hasn't really hit Switzerland yet. They're only just getting in to bundles with free minutes and texts. Although it is getting better and has been a while since I did any research.

eng_ch might be able to help more, she's good like that...

telford_mike, ditto what parlor said. I have a Vodaphone 3G USB modem which I bought in the UK and pay monthly for, and they do a deal that brings it down to £3 per MB, which is still harsh. I tried to find a pay as you go equivalent in Switzerland last season but no luck

Thanks - this matches what I've found in Switzerland. Best PAYG deal at the moment seems to be Sunrise, which has data at CHF0.10 per 20k. This adds up to CHF5 per megabyte - strangely enough about £3 Mad

telford_mike, there are basically no deals in switzerland. There is a free text/1000 minutes one but it's only for the under 26. I pay 35 francs a month and get 250mb, all my calls go VOIP now but this is a 2 year contract. You can go to 55chf a month and get a gig.

orangeclick do something but it still looks expensive. I'm sure you know a wifi to steal somewhere then route your call VOIP Wink

stab, the whole point is telford_mike wants to be able to do mobile e-mail while here, I think? So VOIP over WIFI might be a bit limiting... Wink

where abouts in Swiss

I am on swiss border at bodensee, I use O2 germany, they do a pay as you go mobile internet for 25eu per month contract free, great for skype.

If you were in austria, St Anton area has 3AT which has a partnership with 3UK and you don't pay roaming charges, and you get to use your inclusive minutes. Great for St Anton and Bregenzwelder as I have a uk 3 mobilr on contract.

Not much use if your in deepest swiss though

Thanks all, looks like I'll be the one sitting in reception of the Silberhorn pimping their wifi as usual then.

Funny story which made me start this obsession with mobile data prices. A couple of years ago I got a new laptop which came with a strange new operating system called Vista. Anyhow it worked ok and I used my Nokia as a modem whilst staying in Wengen - nothing much, just a few emails now and then.

Imagine my surprise therefore, to find one morning that Vista had downloaded 56Mb of updates via the phone whilst I was asleep. Entirely my fault - I should have turned bluetooth off before I went to sleep but I'd probably had a few too many Erdingers. And yes I know you can make Vista ask permission before downloding updates, but like I said, it was new then and I was a little the worse for wear. NEVER AGAIN!

That's the best price I've seen so far (CHF2.50/Mb) - half what Sunrise want, and it appears you get a month free once you've clicked through the payment options. It's about a fifth of the regular O2 (UK) price. Maybe the Swissies are getting there after all.

Yes you might well ask. Some place where I can (finally) afford to pay the bill but still look at them out of the corner of my eye and know they're making a bloody fortune out of me I suspect....
