Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Well the news from the slopes is: Cairngorms - busy cussin' as most of the snow has been dumped east of them. There is a chance they'll open the Traverse, 105 and Zig-Zags with a walk to mid-station on Saturday.

Things are looking better for the Lecht. They're hoping to open tomorrow with the Eagle looking best.

These are the only two that are talking about opening but Glenshee could be hopeful, being Easterly.

All interesting, but keep us southerners fully informed in March. Some of us may come up and join you.

These are still very very early days in the winter for Scottish skiing. Although Cairngorm was well covered from December to May in the winter I worked up there, they have had numerous dud Christmas/New Year weeks over the past 20 years, so anything this early is a real bonus.

Good luck to all, for a big blizzard soon.

arv, so maybe it's a good idea to check Nevis Range's official report:

Snow Conditions
Last update - Thu, 04 Dec 2008 11:43:00 GMT

Run ConditionsCurrently there is insufficient snow to commence snowsports. If there are any changes then we will update this message as soon as we can. Gondola closed from 17 Nov to 19 Dec for planned annual maintenance. If there is sufficient snow cover for snowsports during this time then we would look at opening weekends. Keep advised of conditions by checking our website or subscribing to our email or text alerts - details on nevisrange.co.uk.
The Pinemarten coffee shop at the base station is open from 10am-3pm every day during the gondola shut down.
The Downhill track is now closed until May 09 but the 4X & Cross Country Trails remain open.
This page is updated daily

Where's the lie "to us"? The prospect of opening Nevis clearly hinges on a substantial storm. The report above suggests that the snow base is lacking right now. So what's due to happen "tonight/tomorrow"?

David Goldsmith, more snow hopefully, snowed pretty hard here during the day so things could have changed a lot up there. Jus' sayin. Nevis were "talking about opening" and could be seen to be still doing so. It is snowing outside my door now.

Hey Dave, could you open up a wee run from your door? (hehe) It looks like most of the heavy dumping is East but as the blast is coming from the North it could well roll over all of us. It's bl**dy cold enough.

Update-
Cairngorm - Traverse to Zigzag. No uplifts open apart from the funicular. You'll have to walk the last few yards.
The Lecht - Lots of runs now open from the Eagle down to the Robin. Looks like the best snow in Scotland right now.
Glenshee - Just Dinkdink and Sunnyside 1 so not too exciting but good enough for a warm up!
Glencoe - still closed - they have an uninformative website so can't tell how near or far they are from opening.
Nevis Range - LOOKs white but apparently its all a mirage - no runs open. The wind has blown the snow away - bummer!

Come on up - we're one sleeper ride away from London!

Unlike on CairnGorm where there is often a stretch of reasonable (but usually not lasting) skiable snow early on, there has only been skiable snow (in terms of uplift operation) on Aonach Mor a handful of times in that period during the 20years it's been open. Plus, they will open at weekends if there is snow and the Gondola can be put into public operation.

Though less so than Glencoe, Nevis Range needs more of a base and more depth of cover to offering much in the way of meaningful sport the the Eastern areas. Thus the West takes longer usually to get going than the East and anything before Hogmanay is a bonus. Also the influence and temperature inertia of the Atlantic keeps things milder in the West for longer, thermal mid-winter in Scotland isn't until mid to late Feb.

It's rather unfortunate that people look for snow so early and then write of the season because it isn't there. The term winter sports really bugs me, because skiing is actually as much if not more of a spring sport. I find it really galling that ski areas here are closing in spring because of lack of customers not lack of snow and then people complain there wasn't any snow!

This really seems important in terms of getting more people to ski in Scotland.
