Any guidance on issues with this? Obviously need to be switched off, but do they cause problems with security checks? Also, is it a requirement to remove batteries?

Had a few luggage searches - they look at it, then put it back in the bag.

Mine goes in my hold luggage along with my shovel and probe.
When I was flying back from Turkey recently my hand-held VHF radio was right at the bottom of my hold luggage and was picked up on a scan. They asked me to dig it out so they could inspect it, had a quick look, apologised and let me go. Alert scanner operator I thought, it can't be easy to sit there constantly staring at xrays of the contents of bags.

I got it taken out of my hand luggage and asked to explain what it was in Frankfurt last year. Not too sure they understood but they let me go anyway.

Had them taken away and sent with the cabin crew a few years back - soon after 9/11 I would think actually.
They just go in hold luggage now.

TOP TIP
If carrying 2 transceivers, put one on transmit in your hold luggage and the other on receive in your hand luggage - not only makes it easier to find your suitcase at the other end but you can make sure it's got loaded on the plane too
