Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Didn't know you need copies of all the car stuff. Or is just the driving licence you've copied?

Have you got a mat to kneel on to put chains on as applicable?

Wot no winter tyres? Shocked Also remember not to leave your handbrake on when the temp is below freezing - I've mentioned it before but my brakes froze solid when I left the handbrake on during one of our early winters here

Doesn't hurt to keep a shovel and an old blanket in the car. A good scraper/brush (the telescopic ones are good but not essential). When you're in the alps, also worth picking up some of the screen wash additive that's good down to at least -20°, preferably lower

Green card?

green cards not much used any more, but presumably you've checked your car insurance is OK for you to be in France for so long. We had to change ours because the previous one had a 30 day trip limit for driving overseas.

Car breakdown insurance?

Towrope comes in handy for pulling cocky French drivers in big fat fancy 4WD cars out of snowdrifts; I enjoyed that.

A very useful thing is a small spade - nothing fancy, just the sort that kids do sand castles on the beach with - for moving snow/mud away from wheels before fitting chains. I've never felt the need to drive the car up onto any ramps; unless they were very stable I'd feel nervous about that idea. I don't use gloves for fitting chains, I find it faster without, but a pack of handwipes in the glove pocket then comes in useful.

Big fat black bag for putting chains in when you take them off - they'll be revolting and won't go back in the neat little plastic box. Credit card is much easier than cash for tolls. Loads of good music for the long journey?
Have fun. snowHead snowHead snowHead

pam w, yeah my insurance only gives me 30 days in one go... fortunately it runs out in December (almost 30 days after I leave), even more fortunately the cheapest policy for next year gives me 365 days. Tbh it couldn't have been planned better.

Most other things mentioned I've got. Will have avvy shovel handy in case of having to dig wheels out. Fortunately the weather's looking ok atm (touch lots of wood).

Will try and remember about the handbrake.

Thanks everyone, have a great season wherever you go and if anyone's in Les Deux Alpes let me know and you can buy me a beer Cool wink

Swirly, I think we're gonna need a bigger car...

bertie bassett, about that vaseline thing, I tried it when I moved out to France to live. I spent quite a while in the cold smearing it on the car door rubbers having just assured Mrs F that it was a "cool trick to stop the doors freezing shut that I'd heard about on Natives" she was (almost) impressed until the next morning when we found the doors frozen SOLID. It was lunchtime before we could get into the blasted thing. Leave the vaseline at home thats my tip.

While we're on the subject of handbrakes and batteries, I'm going to France on Friday for 3 weeks but the car will be kept in the garage in the chalet. Presumably it's ok there to leave the handbrake on as normal as it's not going to be outside in the snow itself? The only thing that does worry me a bit is if the battery runs down as the car won't be used for the duration. What do you think are the chances of this happening? The longest my car has been left undriven before is a week and it's been recently serviced as well.

Frosty, yes, I deleted my post as it crossed with yours, its still a good idea I use silicon, after my door froze up once. It happens when you get a thaw and water runs into the seals then a good freeze.
VolklAttivaS5, a modern car with a good battery should be fine, my car was out all season in Verbier, just gave the engine a spin once a week. Hmm that reminds me..

Did anyone mention WD40?

VolklAttivaS5, assuming you're not parked on a hill, there is no reason not to leave the handbrake off. We leave ours off in our garage because we'd rather be safe than sorry - frozen brakes are expensive

Silicon spray, readily available from Halfords. Over the years I have seen lots of broken rubber seals because people needed to get in to their cars. Ask The_Doc Laughing Laughing Laughing

Good grief man, this is France, not the bloody backwhacks of the third world. Laughing Bring what you'd normally take on holiday/a long drive. And I should tell you that we wear clothes here - you don't seem to have included any of these. If you find that you've forgotten anything we also have what I believe are called 'shops'. (I don't go in them myself, but I'm told that you can get anything you want in there.)

Tips:
- cards are quicker and easier at the tolls - 'card only' lane is ususally empty.
- steak and chips at service stations is a bargain
- if you need petrol after Grenoble the cheapest place is Intermarche on your left just before Vizille - 1,12€ a litre.
- Marche U's Roche Mazet Cabernet is cheap and will be just what you want after a day's drive
