Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

What are Light Skis?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I've been browsing makers' sites for ski weights, for my missus who hates heavy skis. Only Sal appear to give weight and they don't tell if it includes bindings. The lightest seem to be Scrambler 77W at 1575g., presumably per single ski though they don't say. No one else seems to list weights. Any thoughts for a light ski for good inter. ability (10 weeks about 5 on the 1-10 scale) Ta.

Rossignol and Dynastar both make lady specific skis which are supposed to be lighter than the equivalent skis for men, so I guess other manufacturers would do the same. My wife uses Rossi Saphirs which she's happy with. Doesn't always equate though, as my daughter skis on Dynastar Omecarve slalom skis which are very stiff and very heavy but that shows the difference in their skiing ability.

That sums it up - for skiers whose centre of gravity is often too far back, who end up forcing the skis to turn through bad technique, using muscle power, the skis feel "heavy". Good skiers - female, children, lightweight, whatever - who just lean on a carving ski and help it to do what it wants to do (turn), appear to be floating along.

Volkl also do ladies specific skis - the gamma range. I currently ski their 320 gamma which seems to be lighter than my friend's skis. Everyone does comment on how light they are if they do pick them up (doesn't happen very often). The only problem that I've found with them is that they do tend to 'chatter' at speed. They also have a narrow waist, but seem to float well - I had them out in powder last week when I couldn't get demo skis, and I didn't have too much trouble, although I didn't go in too deep - visibility was a problem! I'm now classed as an advanced skier, but these skis have taken me from my 5th day out, and through everything on-piste, including moguls, crud, Sierra cement, and attempting to carve Black runs. I'm now looking for something different and everything I have demoed has been MUCH heavier! Hope this is of some help! snowHead

I also have Rossi Saphirs (can't remember which model - they're a few years old) and they are light. They also chatter a bit at speed (but that may be my skiing Embarassed ). On the other hand I can carry them on my shoulder as far as anyone else. Some of the heavy ones I can hardly pick up! So however well they ski, there's no point if I can't get to the snow with them rolling eyes

My Rossi Bandit Lite (L) are wonderfully- well-light. They will go anywhere, cope with anything.Good on ice, fine off piste, carve well. I have demoed Bandit XX, Bandit B2, and rented some X Scream Pilots all which weighed a ton on my shoulder walking to the lift! ( No not all at once). Ended up with a bruised shoulder after hauling the Salomon's with the Prolink digging in!

Rossi B2 Bandits 170cm 5.15kg, B2W Bandits, the 'ladies model', 160cm 4.7kg, so the weight difference between the ladies & mens versions is a little more than just the difference in length. That was for the pair complete with Rossi bindings.

Very Happy Thanx to all who have replied, useful info. The "there's no point if I can't get to the snow with them" quote is the cruncher. Feeling worn out by carrying skis to the first lift is no way to enjoy a holiday. happy new snowyear! Cool

Surely light skis belong to Jedi Ski Knights, to go with their light sabres? How would they ride I wonder?

My girlfriend uses a ladies version of Xcreams which are not only light but have the binding forward mounted. She swears by them. She also swears at them from time to time.
