Finnish ski jumping sensation dominates Four Hills event

Janne Ahonen of Finland has virtually out-jumped the historic Garmisch-Partenkirchen hill in the second round of the traditional new year Four Hills event. Ahonen now dominates nordic ski-jumping, having won 9 out of 10 of the most recent World Cup events. At Garmisch his landing was within one metre of the hill record, and he nearly crashed in the process...

Update: Ahonen today (Monday 3 Jan) won the third leg - Innsbruck - of the Four Hills tournament, putting him within grasp of a grand slam. The fourth event, in Bischofschofen (also Austria), is on Thursday.

Germany's Sven Hannawald achieved a sweep of all four jumps three years ago, so Ahonen could be the second jumper in history to score that grand slam if his form continues. Who would bet against him now? !

I went along to the Bergisel with the gf for the first time ever.

It is much better live than on Eurosport. You can see the landings easily and the atmosphere is great. Was funny listening to the Germans and Austrians cheering each other's bad jumps. Plenty of Finns there, for obvious reasons.

Does get a bit cold, though.

In the end, Ahonen's run of success faltered. He placed 2nd in the final round of the Four Hills event today in Bischofschofen, Austria, today.
