I was hoping to get the train for this transfer (Gallarate <-> Zermatt) , but my flight times have stuck me in a bit of a rail schedule no mans land. It's doable, but it's inconvenient. Hiring and driving is maybe an option although with having to get on car carrying trains and stuff it's a bit of a faff.
Does anyone have any tips on this journey? Are there any other handy train stations other than Gallarate which I could get a shtutle bus or taxi to that might offer a useful alternative?
If we go for the self-drive route, how does the Iselle-Brig train car-carrying work? Turn up and drive on, or booking ahead a must?
Any help appreciated.

paulio, you don't have to get on car carrying trains, the Simplon pass is open year round. I've been over it a couple of times from Malpensa and it's a pretty straightforward drive, about 2 hours from Malpensa to Brig. It would be amother 45 mins or so to Taesch. Obviously you can't take the car up to Zermatt itself, so you'll have to factor in garage+taxi or garage+train to the equation. When I did this a few years ago we used these guys

Service was excellent.
If you do hire a car, one thing to watch for is that, if you're arriving with easyjet it will be Malpensa T2 and the only car rental companies with facilities at T2 are Europcar and Avis, otherwise you'll be on a shuttle to T1. If you book Europcar through Easyjet's website, check their prices against their "double the difference" guarantee.

I managed to get a couple of hundred quid refunded on a rental last summer. The comparison has to be against an actual car rental company rather than a broker, you can use

to compare prices.

brian, great thanks. "Garage"? So you can't just abandon your car in Tasch on a side road or something then?
I don't mind about the shuttling between MXP terminals. Doesn't sound too great a hassle in the grand scheme of things!

This is Switzerland, it would make the roads look untidy

Steve Sparks,
paulio, sorry I missed your question about the Iselle-Brig train.
Details are here:

I've not used it but I don't think you need to book. The electronic sign at the Iselle end wasn't working the first time we went that way last December and we drove past it (in the dark). If you get as far as Iselle itself, you've gone too far. Anyway, as it turned out, the pass was fine.

paulio, The car park at the rail station in Tasch seems the best option.

I have to agree with this. A few years ago we went to Zermatt and used one of the Parking/Taxi companies to get to Zermatt and it was a good option then but last year decided to use the Car park in the terminal at Tasch. It's very easy, just park the car and pick up a luggage trolley and you can just wheel the trolley onto the train. I can't remember how much it cost, so it can't have been too costly.

paulio, I'm not sure if you can- it is massive and there's an over flow field so you should be OK.

Very reassuring, cheers all. I'm a bit narked about this really, the trains have badly let me down (or maybe more accurately, Stelios' flight times have).
Still, every cloud. The Simplon Pass looks to be quite a pretty drive. Harrowing memories of driving through/past Turin a few years back though, so not looking forward much to the Milanese outskirts!
