Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

First ski tour of the season

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
The snow started to fall in the Hautes-Alpes a couple of weeks, ago. Now that it has stabilised a bit the touring season is officially open.

We headed up the pic des Chalanches, a good early season tour primarlily because any later in the season the road will be shut some 9km further down the valley adding, well 9km, of extra skinning to the tour (and 800m of climbing).

We did a couple of descents, first heading up to the col at 2539m on the Crete de Maravoise and then heading round to the 2779m pic des Chalanches.

The snow was fantastic, fluffy powder on a consistent base. And the weather, well its the Hautes-Alpes, so the weather was the standard blue skies.

Pics, full story and google earth map of the route on my blog here

philingle, I don't suppose I could ask a favour of you ? Any chance I could get you to upload the GPX file (extracted from the GPS) and upload it to my GPX to KML converter to see how it fairs please ? I'm still working on the code ready for the new season and would like to get as many GPX tracks through the processor as possible to get it as accurate as possible.

Thanks, and thanks to all the other snowHead's that have uploaded their tracks and helped.

fishslice, I had a go with your gpx->kml app. It works well. I like the little added features like showing where the max speed was reached and where the high point was. I think I will start using it regularly to convert my gpx's to kml. Nice work.

we could indeed. Nice video, it looks like you had pretty good conditions too, just a few more tracks over your way. Amazing number of tracks considering there are no lifts.

davidof, Nice video, good quality too, is that filmed using the Samsung NV24 HD ? (It mentions only a "Samsung HD" camera on your web page)

philingle, how's the knee?

Taking videos of skiers is like herding cats. No one wanted to stop and be filmed (too cold etc. - although it was really very mild). Now they are all complaining I didn't take more footage, frame shots better etc.

The camera is the Samsung HDX10 (I think). I bought it for $300 and it is quite good but the videos are a pig to edit and I have not come up with a good trans-coding option for Sony Vegas. Things like pans really up the data rate and cause havoc for a lot of video software. I wish I'd spent more money now as I think HD is the way to go. The one thing in the Samsung's favour is the frame rate of 60fps which makes for much better slow motion.

philingle, no problem, thanks for trying it. If you open up the "Tracks" and Summary Information" folders in the left pane (daily and total summaries) you should get to see some hyperlinks which display the total distances for each day/journey as a whole, and some elevation profiles for each run as well as daily and total profiles.
