The government has finally anounced that the £350m winter sports resort, Snoasis, can be built in Suffolk. Planned to be constructed on a disused quarry, the project has long been backed by the business sector, but has faced strong opposition from environmental groups and some locals....Secretary of State, Hazel Blears, said that the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) said was now "satisfied that the proposal is largely in accordance with the development plan".

Good news but there is a risk that the developer will not build the slope, but will build the residential and commercial development, which creates the value. The slope may be a trojan horse to circumvent planning policy.

tbovey, reading this blurb from the website, your trojan horse theory doesn't seem that cynical.
"Skiing is the most popular winter sport in the world, delighting families and producing some of its most legendary sportsmen and woman. Until SnOasis, winter sport in the Uk, particularly skiing, had no coherent focus making things difficult for keen skiers. SnOasis will provide that focus. It will house Europe’s largest indoor ski slope, measuring 415 metres by 70 metres with a 100 metre vertical drop, enabling skiers of all abilities to progress from beginner to a level matching their abilities, all under one roof, in the world’s first winter sports resort. The slope will not only provide family fun, it features training, competition and championship facilities for elite athletes in a number of internationally recognised disciplines, including: Downhill, Combined, Slalom, Freestyle, Moguls, Aerials, Big Air, Half Pipe and Ski Across."
"the world's first winter sports resort...internationally recognised disciplines...Ski Across"
Imagine skiing producing some of its most legendary sportsmen and women.
I'm probably just bitter because we still don't have one in Ireland.
