Banff - Caribou Lodge on Banff Avenue, or stay in Sunshine itself and leave the transport at the bottom of the gondola.

Depends what you want and how long you are there ? I know you are road tripping but how long are you staying in Banff ? theres some little B+Bs on some of the quieter streets that run parallel To Banff Ave. Wont be high class but will be cheaper than the Caribou.
I would think some of the places at Canmore would be cheaper than Banff and only 20mins down the highway from Banff. It will be possible to turn up in Banff and stop at most of the Hotels as they will probably have some space, if not they can find you a room. What sort of spec do you want ?

Probably only a couple of days so b&b fine. If it's got a double bed then we're o.k. although wife prefers en suite as well (her ski bum training will start shortly after Xmas!).

I stayed in Cedar Springs B&B in Canmore in September and can highly recommend it. It's run by English couple Rob and Ingrid - Rob is, or close to being a ski instructor, so you will get good insider info on the area.

skivor, Johnboy and I stayed in the Sunshine Inn in Sunshine itself for 2 nights during our honeymon four years ago. The hotel was really good, very relaxed and peaceful and had a 40-man hot tub! You can also be the first person on the slopes each day. There is a little bar in Sunshine also called trappers which was good for beer and bbq ribs. The people were very hospitable - the head of transport actually drove us into Banff as we missed the bus (our bags didn't come down from the hotel in time).

Mrs johnboy,
Well said. It was the highlight of our holiday. Sheer isolation, free lift pass for guests and first tracks every morning. Ideal if only staying 2 nights

skivor,
We were in the Banff area just after New Year 2 years ago. We turned up on spec at the Chateau Lake Louise to see if they could accommodate us for one night.
We were pleased to find:
a. Rooms available.
b. It's amazing value for the complete luxury that you are getting. Something like £45 each (room only) for a double at that time. Amazing hotel in an amazing location - every skier should stay there!!
We loved the skiing at Norquay - though it appears to be sneered at by the skiers we spoke to at Lake Louise who told us no locals ski there because the snow's so bad. The snow thing is definitely relative though - on the same trip we heard skiers describing packed powder as "kinda icy" after it hadn't snowed for all of 3 days....
Anyway, on New Year's Day at Norquay, we found a deserted car park (and slopes), amazing snow, some great double black steeps and bumps and a great ski area overall.
Panorama - a couple of hours from Banff - is amazing. Huge vertical, great cruising, briliant steeps - and almost deserted.
Also, if you get the chance, and assuming you are flying to/from Calgary, the Calgary Olympic Park is a great little ski set up. It's worth a few hours for the novelty of skiing a proper ski hill on the edge of a city!!

There is a hostel in Banff too, fine for a couple nights.

There are a couple of hostels actually. I would steer clear of the YWCA.

if you are a good skier, then you will be bored at Sunshine rather quickly, plan to do a road trip and check out Lake Lousie, Kicking horse and Revelstoke. or go the other way to Fernie.

Charlton's Cedar Court is a great hotel and reasonably priced. Have stayed there a couple of times including when we went crazy and got married on Mount Norquay in a blizzard! Big rooms, massive beds, huge tv, fireplace, small indoor pool/jacuzzi and nice staff. Close to ski bus stop and just as importantly only a short walk to Craig's, THE best place for a Canadian breakfast, served by men with plaid shirts and large moustaches!
