I intend to get a day or three in the UK this year, so I want to buy some old skis from eBay that won't "mind" having their bottoms gouged out of them. How on earth do I go about finding a suitable set?
6' 10.5 stone not done a huge amount of skiing. Abroad I'm quite happy hiring skis.
What do I reckon? £50, plus something to have them serviced, check the bindings work, some high-temperature wax?

I've got a set of Dynastar Extreme Radical in 185cm you can have for nothing but postage. They've got Salomon 757 bindings, and a bag. No poles, though. PM if you're interested.

I have a pair of Fischer RC4 WC slalom skis which I've only used in the UK. They are a decent pair of skis with lots of life left in them and are in reasonably good nick. I'm looking for £100 for them assuming we can meet up in London somewhere to hand them over - it's more than you're looking to pay, but they are a good pair of skis and I think that's a fair price. Send me a PM or reply here if you're interested.

I could be interested in the RC4s if James the Last decides against it. How old are they?

Wow! two sets of skis on offer within 20 minutes of posting, thanks, but there's my problem! You might as well have said a pair of Fischer 4CR for £10 for all I know.
And whilst google is usually my friend, the only hit for Dynastar Extreme Radical is a 2005 post on Snowheads from Hywel trying to get rid of these...
Anyway, Rob@rar, I might be interested. Do they have bindings? How long are they? And will they be too fast for me ? ("down a crevasse" buying skis from a mega-snowHead). Collection in London would be fine.

James the Last, yes they have bindings. They are 161cm long which I think is OK for you for skiing in the UK, although you might want something longer for skiing on a mountain. They are quite a stiff ski so would cope well if you wanted to ski fast on them, but strapping them to your feet won't automatically make you a fast skier! I'm not a qualified ski tech so it would probably be wise for any secondhand skis that you buy to take them to a ski shop with your boots to make sure that the bindings are set correctly for you.
BTW, mega-snowHead isn't really an indication of ability, but indicates that you've made a donation to the site

I think that the email address you used when you registered with snowHeads is no longer valid (that's why it says you are "Down a crevasse") so you are not able to use the Private Message system. I just tried to send you my email address but it wouldn't let me send a message to you. If you change your email address in your Personal Profile you should be able to use the PM system.

Ummm, some parts of the UK do have skiable mountains you know !
btw, are a pair of slalom skis really suitable for someone who hasn't "done a huge amount of skiing" ?

rob@rar - Now this is where my naivety comes in with regards to skis. I'm never entirely sure what length I should be considering for different types of skis. If I was to take these skis off your hands, I would be using them for purely piste stuff (I have a pair of stormriders for more extreme stuff and off-piste etc). I'm 6'1 which I believe is about 185/186cm. For this type of ski for this type of use, do you know what length I should be looking at, how tall are you for example?
Can anyone else advise? I know there's an element of personal preference but just need a rough guide.
Oh, and I'm going to be skiing in Banff.

brian, move them a bit closer to London and I'd be a confirmed weekend warrior! For indoor or dryslope use I think a pair of slalom skis is suitable for all grades of skier. As they are relatively short it's easier to do skidded turns on them than a longer ski, and their short turn radius makes it easier to get into carving at least some of the turn on a small slope such as the snowdomes or plastic.
rossco2501, if you will only use them on piste and want a tight radius ski a slalom ski is a good option to go for. I wouldn't recommend them as your only ski as they are a bit specialised for general ski holiday use, but as a complement to an 'all-mountain' ski any pair of slalom skis would be a lot of fun. The slalom skis I use when I'm in the Alps are 165cm - which is the regulation length for slalom skis. I don't think the skier's height has a great deal to do with it, but I'm 5'8 if that helps.

Is British snow really quite so different from Alpine snow? Warmer, wetter, maybe... Weardale is only 4 hours drive from London and I have friends up there.
Still wondering whether these might be a bit advanced for me.
I've updated my email address, so with any luck mountain rescue will be along shortly to dig me out of my crevasse!

Ah, sorry, I've misunderstood. I thought you meant UK skiing at snowdomes or dryslopes. No, I don't think British snow is significantly different from Alpine snow other than being very much more scarce. Slalom skis are well suited to the slope sizes (short and narrow) of snowdomes and dry slopes allowing tighter turns (either carved or skidded). I can't see the point of skiing on anything else on artificial slopes. Unfortunately I've never skied on any of the UK's natural slopes so don't really know what's on offer an whether a pair of slalom skis would be suitable.

rob@rar, I'm keen on buying the skis, although don't want to snatch them from under James the Last's nose so will wait to see what he decides.
Only other sticking point is meeting for collection. I'm in London this weekend and heading to the Fulham area, don't know if that's anywhere near suitable for you!?

That's very gentlemanly, rossco. You go ahead - they're not what I'm after, I don't think.
(I reckon that skiing in a snow drome must be about as much fun as as spending the afternoon riding on the Central Line!)

rossco2501, OK, as James has passed on them I'm happy to sell them to you. Fulham is good for me - it's not too far so I can deliver them if you want. Otherwise I live in Hampton, so if you're coming up the M3 from Poole it is a very small detour for you.
James the Last, good luck with finding something suitable. I tend to look at skiing in the snowdomes as a bit like taking medicine - not always very pleasant but ultimately good for you

Thanks, halfhand. I'm looking for something that will make my skiing easier, not more difficult... I may be wrong, but as they'll be completely unlike anything I've ever used before I don't think they're what I'm after!
II, Seems a bit of a shame to gouge out the bottoms of brand new skis.

rob@rar, Hampton would be fine, think we'll probably park up in Richmond and get the train through to Fulham so not really out of the way at all. What's best for you, meet somewhere or do you want to send me your address in a private message or something?? (You'd need to tell me how to access my private messages as I've not got a clue!!)
