Poster: A snowHead
|
I'm off to book for next year this weekend and Kitzbuhel is looking favourite (8 of us and we want to get onto one of the few flights direct from Belfast so have to plan ahead). Should we book our ski hire etc through the tour operator (Inghams) or do it ourselves? I can't help but think it would be cheaper to do it ourselves. Advice anyone? Can anyone point me in the right direction, especially regarding lift passes & ski schools? I notice in the 04/05 preview brochures that Inghams charge £101 for an area pass for January, while Crystal charge £91 - surely this can't be right! Does anyone know if lift passes can be pre-booked on the net? I know next January seems a long way away but we'd like a clearer picture before we hit the travel agency this weekend - I certainly don't want to ask for their advice.[/i]

It's peak season next week and the 6 day pass is 160 Euros. You can buy them from the lift station office in seconds -Swatch type no need for photos.
Inghams have never overcharged me, but the Euro is strong at present and the brochures were printed a while ago.
Intersport have most of the hire outlets and prices are much the same everywhere. I'd go fort local convenience.
I love Kitz and will be happy to advise re runs etc.
The Bergbahn has an excellent website. www.bergbahn-kitzbuehel.at with useful links.

I often wonder about the lift-pass side of things seeing as a lot of (most? all?) lift companies wouldn't even have announced next winter's prices, yet. However, I've never actually made the comparison.
As for hire, it depends. There are always (often) more than one ski hire place at a resort and your travel company will arrange a deal with one of them. They may get a discount deal, but I'd be surprised (especially if they passed that on). If you do it yourself, youy can shop around and will have more choice, but many people aren't bothered to go to that effort. See if you can get a recommendation for a place, if so you may be better sorting that out yourself.
We went DIY last week, but everyone who rented from our group ended up using the same one as the tour operator anyway.

Hahnenkamm ski school is good. They are located near the main gondola next to the railway station. You can book direct with them via email. We wanted specific lessons and it was easier to book direct. I can also recommend the Hotel Montana - great location for skiing and main gondola, few minutes walk to bars etc.

Sorry about mis-reading you original post TC, . I read you as next week not next year!
I do get distracted by work from time to time, but try to keep it to a minimum.

Thanks guys, we're all booked up for 8 Jan next year. The consensus of opinion was to wait til we get there to hire skis, buy lift passes etc, a decision aided by your words of wisdom & a reply to an email I sent to The tourist info office. We will probably take your advice Hayley and use the Hahnenkamm Ski School, as I like to go with personal recommendations. Too early to book anything yet but THANKS AGAIN.

TC, you'll have a great time, I was there during that week last year, I stayed at the Hotel Haselsberger which was only just further up from the Hahnenkhamm gondola, the skiing was great but unfortunately it was a bit icy on the lower slopes but that changed after a huge dump on the Tuesday of that week.
Enjoy!

Thanks for that, just what I needed to hear. We guessed it must be good as there were only two rooms left for that week after we booked last Saturday. Any tips on good hire shops near the Hotel? Sorry to be a pain.

The one Inghams uses is quite closeby to the Hahnenkhamm gondola, I think its called Olympic Sport. They also have a ski storage room but if you own your own boots I would not recommend using it for them as I thought it was not very secure.
