There's a guy in shorts at the bottom of araphoe basin webcam!
I can't help but think that in these economic times, this really isn't money well spent....

kitenski, I dont think it is really worth it. The environmental cost of the snow guns.
Not a good idea.

It can't be that warm, there's (admittedly not much) some natural snow around. Probably environmentally not as mental as snowdomes.

Sorry guys disagree to some extent as theres more enviromental impacts in other areas which could be avoided. If we stopped doing anything that had an impact on the enviroment we would be dead ( but that too would have an impact )

How much terrain is open? I was in Boston during October a few years ago when the local news was full of stories about Killington opening early that season, with video of a few skiers and boarders enjoying the snow. I had a free day and was planning to drive up to New Hampshire or Vermont to do some leaf-peeping so thought I'd aim for Killington and maybe get an afternoon's skiing in. I was a wee bit surprised when I got to the resort to find that their definition of 'open' was 200m of artificial snow at the start of one of the pistes at the top of the gondola!

Bones, I don't disagree with using artificial snow, however I feel the race to be "first" is meaning creating snow too early, which sometimes means the resort shuts again, then has to rebuild the base up...
I feel if they waited a few more weeks then they could potentially avoid the melt, and save some costs/energy......

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

The free publicity / promotion from being first to open far outweighs the cost of snowmaking and advertising.
Sound economic sense from both ski areas. They can't compete with the bigger Colorado resorts in terms of exposure through paid means. This initiative gets them on somewhat of an even footing.

Now that's a quality TGR thread title, puts some of SZKs efforts to shame

It's cool to blast the mountain with manmade and open the slopes before everyone else.
